Mohawk FFA On April 24, Mohawk FFA had its 63rd annual chapter banquet. The newly elected officer team is Trenton Horner as President, Cathy Dyer as Vice President, Ava Wilkinson as Secretary, Trenna Johnson as Sentinel, Baylee Miller and Anna Russell as Reporters and Cheyenne Belcher and Allison Russell as Treasurers. The star discovery award went to Baylee Miller, which is awarded to the eighth-grader that is most active and shows leadership. The Star Farmer award went to Trenton Horner, which is awarded to the student that demonstrates top production agriculture supervised agriculture experience. The Star Agribusiness award was given to Josh Kimmet, which is awarded to the student with the top nonproduction agribusiness supervised agricultural experience. The Senior DeKalb award also went to Josh Kimmet, which is given a senior for their excellence in scholarship, leadership and agricultural work experience. The 110% award was given to Abby Dyer. Mohawk's Young Farmers' Scholarship was awarded to Taylor Lawhorn and Josh Kimmet. Mohawk's 2020-2021 Honorary member is Adam Huffman. Allen Eiry Travel Club The Travel Committee of the Allen Eiry Center met and discussed whether to open the center's travel program. With the guidelines from the governor's office being lifted recently, it was decided to go forward, after presenting to the Board of Directors in May they approved to begin travel effective July 1. Travel coordinator Sara Wax said "I am over the top about their decision! The last trip we took was in March of 2020." Wax reported to the group that she has several day trips and multiday trips planned for the upcoming months. Multiday trips include NYC, Mississippi River, Lancaster, PA to see the epic "Ester," Christmas on the Potomac, Alabama winter get away and a trip to Jamestown "Lucy Fest" and an extended trip to Vermont and New Hampshire. Travel began in 1971 when the center was Senior Community Services located on Market Street in downtown Tiffin, later moving to Orchard Park and now located at their 28 Hopewell Avenue facility. The Allen Eiry Center is open to anyone 50 years and older. "Travel has grown to be an important part of the organization," Wax said. Usually 50-60 trips a year are offered; historical, educational, sports, dinner groups and entertainment are just a few of their offerings. She stressed that it is very important to keep senior citizens active both mentally and physically. Tiffin Glass Collectors Club The Tiffin Glass Collectors Club met on Tuesday, May 11. President Paul Coffman thanked Ed Goshe for updating the window displays each month and the docents who volunteer their time each week. Nancy Coffman and Ed Goshe are cleaning the printing blocks that were used in the advertising of the glass factory. The 1915 Tiffin Glass catalog is now completed and for sale in the Museum Shoppe. Show cards are available for distribution for the glass show and sale which will be Saturday, November 13 and Sunday, November 14 at the St. Joseph Activity Center in Tiffin. Following the meeting, Ed Goshe presented the Show & Tell program on novelty lamps. Members also viewed the new window display of novelty lamps. The June Show & Tell will feature "open work on bowls and vases." Tiffin Rotary The meeting was opened by president Beth Schweitzer. Rev. Phil Moerdyk gave an opening prayer. Beth announced that the Club will host our annual Club Picnic at the Moose Shelter at Hedges-Boyer Park on Tuesday, June 1 at 6 p.m. There will be no noon meeting that day. She also encouraged members to consider attending the Governor's Awards Celebration on Thursday, June 17. It will be at the Hancock Hotel in Findlay and will cost $40 per person. The Board has decided to host the Hospitality Suite. This will be Keith's only official gathering during his Governorship since COVID canceled every other in-person event. Installation of the new District Leadership Team will take place in Avon Lake on May 25. There were no guests today. Attendance was 18 Rotarians. Kim Simonds will celebrate a birthday this week. Our own Rachal Tate from Edward Jones was our speaker today talking about cryptocurrency. Rachal started by noting that her report was based on her opinions only and not those of Edward Jones. The internet's first form of currency was the "bitcoin" developed in 2009 at the tail end of the recession. It had a $1 trillion market cap. It was termed a "peer to peer" financial transaction. In other words, no one else was involved — no bank or credit agency. It was totally decentralized and had no history of transactions. Only you controlled what happened. This appealed to the 31% of adults who had no bank account. They, for one reason or another, spurned the traditional form of finance. Rachal also noted that people react to new technology differently. There are five categories of how people react: Innovators - take risks; Early Adopters - want to be trendsetters; Early Majority - logic-based people; Late Majority - Need proof; Laggards - skeptical and resistant to change. The challenge is that all of those people need to be persuaded to use the new technology. There are about 6,700 different types of cryptocurrencies but the most popular is the Bitcoin, with about $1.2 trillion of market share. New currencies evolve frequently, therefore, it can be a volatile environment. To learn more about investing in cryptocurrencies, seek the advice of a certified financial advisor. Daughters of the American Revolution — Jane Washington Chapter Regent Sharon Casey called the May 6 meeting of the Jane Washington Chapter DAR to order at KemoSabes Roadhouse Grill in Fostoria. Thirteen members attended. Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance, the DAR Ritual and the American's Creed. Judy Shreck gave the National Defense moment. Dessert was served. Under old business, the secretary and treasurer's reports were read, approved and filed for audit. There was no program as it was the Annual Meeting. Committee reports were given. Registrar Marilyn Stinehart announced that our Jane Washington Chapter will be celebrating 100 years March 27, 2022. We need to be planning ways to appropriately celebrate this milestone.
