Historic Trust presents preservation awards

The City of Tiffin is well-known for its historic buildings. This year the Tiffin Historic Trust selected a few of these buildings to be presented with Historic Preservation awards. This year, two awards were presented during the Tiffin Historic Trust's annual membership awards dinner on June 29. Awards were presented to the owners of the buildings to acknowledge and honor their efforts to maintain and preserve those buildings. Receiving the Nevin E. B. Martin Award were Justin and Lydia Atkin, owners of the Atkin-Kahler Apartment Building, 269 S. Washington St. Justin Atkin noted that he kept many of the historic features of the two-story, 10 unit building that was built in 1914. Those features include the original hardwood floors and doors, claw-footed bathtubs and cast aluminum chandeliers, while doing the necessary modernizing such as rewiring. Herb and Paula Crum also were presented the Historic Preservation Plaque for their home at 176 Jefferson St. Herb and Paula worked on preserving their 1891 duplex over the years, retaining many of its original features, including several light fixtures. They incorporated other antiques in the Eastlake-style home, as well as adding Paula's handmade stained glass windows. A new garage on the alley was designed to coordinate with the home. The grassless backyard garden features unique plants and decorative pieces. The couple also had help from Ed and Fred Goshe who helped with restoration and Bishops Plumbing and Heating.
