Tiffin Train Depot blows past vandalism

In May, the Tiffin Train Depot, at 65 North Monroe St., fell victim to an act of vandalism that left the depot worse for wear and brought a sense of collective sadness and disappointment to those who so often enjoyed visiting the local piece of history. In the months since the incident, Larry Breidenbaugh has worked to bring the spot back to its former glory, which he had worked for 12 years to create and maintain. Breidenbaugh cleaned the ponds, replaced the fish, added a new water pump and put up a security system. Police presence also increased in the area to stop future would-be vandals. To celebrate the fixes, the depot recently hosted students from the Seneca County Opportunity Center. Breidenbaugh said the students enjoyed a sack lunch, received train tickets they had stamped at the ticket booth and enjoyed the scenery the depot continues to provide. "The coolest folks from the School of Opportunity graced the depot for a luncheon and a field trip," Breidenbaugh said. Breidenbaugh added that he won't give up on the depot. "I won't give into vandals. The depot is for everyone to visit, it is Tiffin's treasure," he said. Breidenbaugh also announced the Tiffin Train Depot will host an open house Sunday from 1-5 p.m. There will be pizza, light refreshments and beverages available. Visitors are welcome to take family photos, enjoy the scenery and socialize, he said.
