New Riegel Class of 1970 reunion

Members of the New Riegel High School Class of 1970 celebrated their reunion, "Cheers to 50 Years," on Saturday, Oct. 9. Cancelled due to Covid concerns last year, the rescheduled event began with a mass at All Saints Church, New Riegel, in honor of living and deceased class members. Barb Young served as lector while Sandra Scherger and Pat Metzger were Eucharistic ministers for the mass. Steve Bouillon, Betty Fredritz, Peg Hoerig and Jeff Underwood were offertory/gift bearers. Following mass, the group gathered at Moreno's in Carey for appetizers and a cocktail hour followed by a dinner buffet and reunion cake. Classmate Pastor James Walter led the group in prayer prior to the banquet. Gold decorations following the "Cheers to 50 Years" theme adorned the tables and banquet room. In addition, a memorabilia table display of class pictures, scrapbooks and yearbooks, as well as a door prize table added to the evening's festivities. A memorial display including photos, a vase of eight red roses, a framed memorial poem and a white candle lantern honored the eight deceased classmates. Mary Ellen Brickner conducted the business meeting and class members learned books were donated to the New Riegel Elementary School Library in memory of fellow classmates who passed away since the 45th reunion, including Janis (Osborn) Reinhart, Terry Lee Reinhart, David G. Zoeller and David H. Scherger. The class also agreed to donate "Oh the Places You'll Go" by Dr. Seuss and "Dick and Jane, Run Wherever We Are" by Grosset and Dunlap to the New Riegel elementary library in honor of their 50th reunion. Other highlights of the evening included updates on fellow classmates who were unable to attend and the signing of a get well card for fellow classmate Paul "Butch" Tiell. In addition to an evening of reminiscing, classmates participated in a 50/50 raffle, were awarded door prizes, received a copy of the class directory booklet and posed for a class reunion picture. Music from the 50's, 60's and 70's by the John Morton Band was available on the patio for all to enjoy. Class members and guests attending from out of state were John Boes of Ramsey, Michigan and Jim and Paula Walter of Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. Other attendees included Mary Ellen (Theis) and Robert Brickner of Alvada, and Linda (Reinhart) Popenberg of Alvada; Betty (Metzger) and Gary Fredritz, Larry and Pat (Schalk) Metzger, Carey; Steve and Becky Bouillon, Fostoria; Dave and Elaine Staib, Dan and Deborah Tiell, Jeff and Sandra Underwood and Barb (Ulman) Young of New Riegel; Janice (Nye) and Greg Russell, Port Clinton; Dennis and Sharon Schreiner, Sandusky; Jeannie (Weinandy) and Jim Brickner and Peg (Lauer) and Mark Hoerig, Tiffin; Paul and Mary Gnepper, Van Buren; and Sandra (Doran) and Dennis Scherger of Whitehouse. The event was hosted by chairpersons Mary Ellen Brickner, Betty Fredritz and Peg Hoerig. Sandra Scherger, Dennis Schreiner and Linda Popenberg volunteered to organize the 55th class reunion in 2025.
