Up your digital literacy with the library

One of the positive things that has come out of the past few years is that people are working to better themselves by trying new hobbies, developing better computer skills, learning how to be more productive at work or brushing up on interview skills in preparation of a career change. At the Tiffin-Seneca Public Library, we offer a variety of digital resources that can help with all of those things and more. These resources are available for use in the Library, at home or on the go. In today's connected world, computer access, internet connectivity and basic computer skills are more important than ever. Our newest resource, Northstar Digital Literacy, is an online learning tool that covers a variety of technology scenarios. You can learn essential computer skills, such as learning how to use the internet and the basics of your computer, whether that be a Windows or Mac operating system. You can also learn how to use (or gain more experience on) specific software systems, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Google Docs. Lastly, with Northstar, you can gain experience in social media, career skills, how to support K-12 remote learning and more. To get started with Northstar, visit www.tiffinsenecalibrary.org/online-learning-resources and click on the Northstar logo to create a free account. For each skill area, Northstar will assess your current level of experience to determine the best place to start. Another online learning tool available free of charge on our website is LinkedIn Learning, formerly known as Lynda.com. LinkedIn Learning is a great resource for workplace development and gives you access to more than 6,600 courses. Topics include business skills such as accounting, marketing and leadership; technology skills like web development and software development; and creative skills such as graphic design, photography and video production. You can pick your top topics of interest, set time goals (as little as 15 minutes a week!) and track your progress with certificates of completion. These certificates can be useful in showing your current employer that you are working to develop your workplace skills, and can differentiate you from other job candidates if you are job hunting. If you were a previous user of Lynda.com, you can still access your data and learning progress as long as you log in to LinkedIn Learning by May 13. Last, we offer Brainfuse, a live, on-demand tutoring program for students and job seekers. Brainfuse features live online tutoring in a safe and secure environment, expert writing guidance, academic and standardized test prep, comprehensive video learning library and so much more for students of all ages! Tutors are available daily from 2-11 p.m. Each of these resources is completely free with your Library card, can be used anytime, anywhere and will help you get connected — and stay connected — in today's digital world.
