2 found dead in Fostoria home fire

FOSTORIA — Two people were found dead in a Fostoria home after a fire was reported Monday morning. A caller reported a home was on fire with smoke coming out of it in Lot 34 of the Poplar Village Mobile Home Park, 12400 W. Axline St. Fostoria Fire Department and Washington Township Fire Department were called to the scene at 9:03 a.m. At 9:08 a.m., Washington Township was contacted for an engine and manpower, a police report states. Bascom Joint Fire District was also dispatched to the scene. When Bascom crews arrived at the scene, they were informed there were two possible occupants in the residence. "The residents were located within the home," Bascom Fire Chief Chris Daniel said. "When they were pulled from the home, they were confirmed to be deceased at the scene." Richard Prenzlin, 48, and Monique Jones-Prenzlin, 50, were later identified as the residents found deceased at the home. Daniel also said the fire originated from the living room and the Ohio State Fire Marshal is conducting an investigation. However, he said Monday they did not believe there was any foul play involved. Fostoria Fire Chief Brian Herbert said when Fostoria crews arrived at the scene, there was only light smoke coming through the front door and a broken-out window. "There was no visible fire," Herbert said. Daniel said the fire was oxygen-deficient due to a neighbor putting a fire extinguisher in through an air conditioner opening. By the time crews arrived, the fire was small as the home was sealed up, he said. "Once the residents were out of the home, it took about a minute to put the fire out," Herbert said. The fire was put out at 9:26 a.m., according to the press report.
