Mark your calendar for summer Verandah Concerts FREMONT — Folk singers, a jazz band and a group of ukulelists are among the performers who will be featured this summer during the Verandah Concert series at the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums. The popular concerts take place twice a month on Wednesdays on the verandah of the historic home of 19th U.S. President Rutherford and First Lady Lucy Hayes. Bring a lawn chair or blanket for seating on the expansive lawn. Admission is free. Each event begins with an ice cream social at 6:30 p.m. Donations can be made for the ice cream. Kids create hands-on projects during free program FREMONT — Children can build ships and boats, learn creative construction and make their own roller coaster this summer during the Frohman Summer Series: Hands-on History at the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums. The three-part series, which promotes learning about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through local history, will take place in-person during three sessions. There also will be 10 take-home kits available per session for those who would rather complete the activities at home. In-person sessions are from 10 a.m.-noon. Registration for in-person attendance or to receive a take-home kit that can be picked up at Hayes Presidential is required. Sessions for each month are: June 15 – Cedar Point Roller Coasters - Students can learn about speed, strength, gravity and other principles of physics and engineering by building a roller coaster using a variety of materials. This session is sponsored by Sierra Lobo. July 13 – All Hands on Deck!: Ships and Boats of the Great Lakes - Students will learn about buoyancy, flotation, displacement and other principles of physics and engineering by building different types of boats with a variety of materials. Aug. 17 – Thinking Outside the Box: Engineering and Creative Construction - Using the Frohman historic photographs and documents, students will learn about the innovative cardboard box manufacturer, Hinde & Dauch Paper Company. Celebrate Independence Day with free concert FREMONT — Celebrate Independence Day by attending a patriotic concert performed by the Toledo Concert Band, featuring members of the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, on the verandah of the historic Hayes Home. The Hayes Presidential Library & Museums' annual Independence Day Concert is from 2-3:30 p.m. Monday, July 4. Admission is free. Concert-goers are asked to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating on the expansive lawn of the Hayes Home at Spiegel Grove, the estate of President Rutherford and First Lady Lucy Hayes. The Toledo Concert Band will perform a variety of songs, including Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture" while Civil War reenactors fire cannons in sync with the music. Food trucks Kitchen 212 and Smyles Icy Treats will sell snacks and lunch on-site. The Independence Day Concert is sponsored by Hal and Diane Hawk and Crown Battery. Enjoy vintage baseball with the Spiegel Grove Squires FREMONT — See how baseball was played during the Civil War era, when it was first rising to popularity, at the Spiegel Grove Squires. The Squires, the vintage team at the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums, have four home games and will participate in vintage baseball tournaments and games at other sites in Ohio in Michigan. Home games are played on the lawn behind the Hayes Home, and admission is free. The Squires are sponsored by Whirlpool Corp.
