Heidelberg honors students present senior capstone projects Heidelberg University senior honors students presented their final capstone projects this week on April 26-28. Through the capstone honors course, students worked with a faculty mentor to deepen their understanding of a topic of compelling interest in their major. Their presentations, which also included a written component, are the culmination of their research and study. The following local students who presented were James Williams of Attica, "American Marketing Trends of the Late Nineteenth to Mid-Twentieth Century";Julia Jacobs of Green Springs, "Am I Mentally Ill or Did I Just Anger the Greek Gods?: An Exploration into the Use of Prescientific Mythology to Explain Mental Illness"; and Lauren Reaves of Tiffin, "The COVID-19 Pandemic and Effects on Workplace Productivity." Heidelberg honors students recognized for achievements The following local students were among about 85 students honored at the conclusion of the spring semester at Heidelberg University. This year's Student Awards Celebration took place on April 22 and returned to an in-person celebration after a two-year pandemic hiatus. Students received their awards during Heidelberg's celebration of academic, athletic, service and leadership excellence among individual students, student organizations and staff and faculty members. Local students honored were as follows: Chayenne Powers of Attica received the Elizabeth Conrad Zartman Prize in Philosophy; James Williams of Attica received the John Allen Krout Prize in American History; Riley Gibson of Bloomville received the J. Robert Allman Award in Theatre Arts; MaKenzie Brooks of Clyde received the Outstanding Freshman in Criminology Award; Seth Hohman of Clyde received the Herman E. Sayger Award (athletics); Ashtyn Wolph of Fostoria received the School of Music & Theatre Berg Bravo! Award; Seth Eisenhower of Green Springs received the Ferris and Dorothy Ohl Prize (musical performance); Delaney Gill of Green Springs received the Edward Lamb Foundation Prize (business administration, economics); Taylor Ratliff of New Washington received the Outstanding First-Year Student in Psychology Award; Nicholas Hausman of Tiffin received the R.J. Brand Prize in Physics; Chelsea Higgins of Tiffin received the E.I.F. Williams Memorial Prize in Elementary Education; Nycholas Martinez of Tiffin received the William Henry and Harriet Jane Gibson Prize (Concert Choir non-music major); Gavin Robison of Tiffin received the John C. Shinn Memorial Award (history, political science or economics); and Em Swain of Tiffin received the Daniel J. and W.J.K. Snyder Prize for the top graduating senior and the Ralph & Sue Quellhorst Community Service and Civic Engagement Award. Honor society inducts new members BATON ROUGE, LA — The following locals recently were initiated into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Inductees included Ronee Rice of Tiffin at The University of Toledo and Channelle Lyons of Tiffin at Bowling Green State University. UF students participate in symposium FINDLAY — Students at the University of Findlay recently participated in the annual Symposium for Scholarship and Creativity. Undergraduate and graduate students were given the opportunity to share their research, creativity and professional learning experiences with the university and community, with many students receiving honors. UF students perform spring voice recital FINDLAY — Students at the University of Findlay recently performed in a spring voice recital. Local students include the following: Jack Yeater of Carey performed "Me voglio fa'na casa" by Gaetano Donizetti and "Something's Coming" by Leonard Bernstein. Yeater also performed in a duet of "Man of La Mancha" by Dale Wasserman; and Averie Fritz of Clyde performed "Wie Melodien zieht es mir" by Johannes Brahms and "Pie Jesu" by Gabriel Faure. Von Stein performs in piano recital FINDLAY — Emily Von Stein, of New Washington, recently performed in a spring piano recital at the University of Findlay. Von Stein performed "Polovtsian Dance" by A. Borodin, arr. Zirm to performs in spring band concert FINDLAY — Nora Zirm, of Tiffin, performed in a spring band concert with the University of Findlay's Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble on May 1. Titled "Classics Old and New," the concert features well-known works from hundreds of years ago, along with more recent pieces that have become classics in their own right. The bands will be under the direction of Wes King, director of bands at the University of Findlay. Heidelberg offering summer camp The Heidelberg University School of Music and Theatre is again offering a summer camp for students in grades 8-12. Campers can sign up for a residential experience or commute to Heidelberg's campus. Campers will get to experience singing in a choir, playing in a band and acting on stage. Camp dates are June 5-10. The deadline to sign up for the camp has been extended to May 15. Residential tuition is $550 and includes all meals and housing. Commuter tuition is $450 and includes lunch and dinner. All campers receive admission for two to the camp performance on Friday, June 10, one camp T-shirt and all supplies required for sessions as part of the tuition.
