Upper Sandusky Quiz Bowl places 17th in nation

UPPER SANDUSKY — Students from the Upper Sandusky High School Quiz Bowl team recently placed 17th in the nation in a small school tournament in Illinois. The team competed in the NAQT Small School National Championship Tournament from April 22-24, led by coach and history teacher Aaron Frazee. "We knew it was going to be challenging and it was," Frazee said, "but these kids embrace challenges and enjoy the competition and seeing each other have success." The tournament was played at the Hyatt Regency in Rosemont, Illinois, and over 100 schools competed. Fifty-five of the schools were placed within the traditional small school division, which included Upper Sandusky. There were 5 pools of 11 teams, allowing each team to play 10 preliminary matches. Upper Sandusky won 6 matches to advance to the championship tournament and netted a winning record of 7-3 overall, finishing 17th in the nation out of all traditional small schools in the competition. Frazee, who has been coaching Quiz Bowl for 13 years, said the Quiz Bowl team has "a voracious appetite for learning and they will read about anything they can get their hands on." The team's participation in the tournament was made possible with the support of the school, the Wyandot County Young Professionals organization and Kimmel Corporation. "We are very lucky to have the support that we do," Frazee said. "I truly believe that (the students) created lifelong memories and I just feel blessed to be a part of that," he said. "They really are an amazing group of young men and women."
