Christian Youth Camp seeking new registrants

This summer, volunteers from Churches of Christ across the state are encouraging individuals to attend the Northwestern Ohio Christian Youth Camp and develop a sense of "self-care, perspective and renewal." The camp, dubbed NWOCYC, is a faith-based summer program for all ages. During camp, individuals can expect to partake in activities such as singing, swimming, outdoor entertainment (like improvisation groups, magicians, boomerang throwers and more), arts and crafts, bible classes and games. During a recent Seneca County Commissioners meeting, Dee Knapp, a camp staff member and fitness director, said the camp "is a gem and it is a true treasure right here in Seneca County," emphasizing the "rich history" of the camp property and the services provided by the week-long programs. Camp sessions are built for different age categories including all ages week for children eight through 18 years old, teen week for youth ages 13-18, and wellness week for adults only, ages 18 and up. Knapp said the camp is open to those residing in and outside of Seneca County. "We just want to connect," Knapp said. "In today's world, it's what we need more than ever before." Previously known as Camp Pittenger, the campground was owned by the City of Tiffin for 40 years before NWOCYC took ownership in 1979. NWOCYC, located at 8877 S. Township Road 131, McCutchenville, has also recently partnered with Tiffin University's history department to dig up more information on the origins of the campground. Over Memorial Day weekend, Knapp said the camp's inviting individuals from across the community including those who attended Camp Pittenger to a Rally Day celebration and 5k run/walk on May 28. Then, on May 29 a Camp Pittenger reunion will be hosted, where previous campers can and share their memories of the program, and dive deeper into the elements of the camp history. Proceeds raised from the event will go toward the purchase and reconstruction of the camp's new dining hall. "One week of summer changes their life," Knapp said, adding that she wants the community to know the camp exists and offers their facility as a place for gathering "to learn, to unplug, to play, and to grow." "The sky is truly the limit," she added. The theme for the set of this summer's camps is "The Passion of Christ." Camp dates include: June 26—July 2: Teen Week directed by Chris Cannon. July 3-9: All Ages Week directed by Josh Derr. July 10-16: All Ages Week directed by Tim Nowlin. July 18-22: Wellness Week (for adults) directed by Dee Knapp July 24-30: All Ages Week directed by Nick Strawser Currently, the NWOCYC property consists of 14 sleeping cabins; a chapel; an amphitheater; an Olympic sized swimming pool; basketball courts; a fire circle; a recreation field and room; the Sandusky River; a dining hall with provided meals; nurse station; a canteen; an arts and crafts building; and housing for directors. "I feel in my heart this is exactly what the world needs," Knapp said. "To come together, to get outdoors, to breathe fresh air and to recharge our batteries." To register for camp, visit nwocyc.org.
