Council hears fire dept. update

During a meeting of Tiffin City Council, Tiffin Fire Rescue Division Chief Rob Chappell provided an annual update of the department Monday. Chappell said the department currently has 30 personnel with two chief officers. Personnel is divided into three crews who work a 24 hours on and 48 hours off schedule. In 2021, there were 690 non-EMS calls with 22 building fires. In addition, the department assisted with 42 other fire incidents with neighboring departments. In 2021, the department responded to 2,924 EMS calls and transported 2,115 patients. Narcan was administered to 90 individuals in 2020 and 80 individuals in 2021. The department also inspected 900 buildings, which they do annually. The goals for the department in 2022 are to update new and existing technology, more officer development training, develop a five-year plan on improving current levels of service and expand and improve recruitment and retention efforts. On another matter, Tiffin Mayor Aaron Montz read a mayoral proclamation declaring June Brain and Alzheimer's Awareness Month. The council approved the following ordinances during the meeting Monday: * Ordinance to amend the sections 197.012 and 197.013 of the Tiffin Codified Ordinances to the city to provide for the continuation of the municipal income tax levy for road and bridge repairs.* Ordinance to authorize the mayor and T-SEP to apply to receive funds through the Ohio Department of Development, Office of Community Development for the Small Cities Community Development Block Grant.* Ordinance to authorize the city administrator to enter into an agreement with a design firm for the long-term control plan backflow prevention and stormwater diversion project. The approval was done with the suspension of the body's three-reading rule due to supply chain concerns.* Ordinance to authorize the city administrator to prepare plans and advertise and receive bids for the West Market Street and South Monroe streets sewer project. The approval was done with the suspension of the body's three-reading rule due to supply chain concerns.* Ordinance to amend the budget to establish Fund 422 — 2022 Street Improvement Bonds and transfer money to pay interest and appropriate money for the sewer bond. The approval was done with the suspension of the body's three-reading rule for the purpose of appropriating funds into the budget.* Ordinance to amend the 2022 Budget to appropriate a $10,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Commerce into the Fire/Rescue Division Budget. The approval was done with the suspension of the body's three-reading rule for the purpose of making funds available.* Ordinance to amend the 2022 Budget to appropriate $950 in donations received from the Tiffin AMVETS and Marc and Lisa Gelinas into the Park and Rec Budget. The approval was done with the suspension of the body's three-reading rule for the purpose of making the funds available.* Ordinance to authorize the city administrator to prepare plans and to advertise and receive bids for the Harvest Lane Culvert project. The approval was done with the suspension of the body's three-reading rule for the purpose of starting work, as the ground is sinking.
