Tiffin Lions Club Twenty-five Lions and six guests met at 6 pm at the First Christian Church for a Porkchop Potluck. Following the meal, Past District Governor Pete DiCesare, Fostoria Lions, installed the following officers for the 2022-2023 Lion year: Jenny Shetterly-Bulletin Editor, John Maddox-Chaplain, Dave Fisher-Membership Chair, Paul Klaiss, Madelin Scherger, Al Karcher, Lloyd Sand- Directors, Gary Norris-Tail Twister, Margaret Werling- Lion Tamer and Treasurer, Connie Cole-Secretary, Steve Cochie-First Vice President, Michael Smith-President.Membership Chair, Dave Fisher, presented Chevron Awards to Doug Repp-35 years, Mike Lemon-30 years, Dave Fisher-30 Years, Dan Galaba-25 years, Chad Swartz-15 years, Jill Baumgardner-10 years. Chevrons will be delivered to Joe Granata-40 years and John DeBarbrie-20 years.Past District Governor Steve Cochie presented a Melvin Jones Fellow to President and Treasurer Margaret Werling. The Melvin Jones Fellow award can be presented to a member or community member after a club donates $1,500 or more to Lions Club International. This is a way of recognizing people who have contributed to the community and is given to honor an individual's help and commitment. Club President Margaret Werling presented the Tiffin Lion of the Year pin to Steve Cochie. Twenty Attendance pins were presented to members for 100 % attendance during the 2021-2022 Lion Year.President Elect Mike Smith shared his goals for the next year: Membership, Membership, and Membership. Seneca Toastmasters Seneca Toastmasters #1845 met on Tuesday, June 28 at 7 p.m. in the Jr. Home Room in the Tiffin-Seneca Public Library with 5 members present. President John Curtin presided at the last meeting of his term as president. He welcomed the members and read the Mission of a Toastmasters Club. Suzanne Black provided the opening and led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. She continued as Humorist with a story about barbequing for a crowd. Topicmaster Laurel Lilly started a story about chartering a sailboat to go to Put-in-Bay with Toastmasters onboard to enjoy some fishing and sailing on the lake. A storm came up and Curtin continued with the boom swaying and knocking the captain into the water. He was rescued. Tom Burwell continued with dropping and dragging the anchor. Jim Black dropped the sail, pulled up the anchor, but the motor did not start. Suzanne Black ended the episode declaring not to go sailing with Toastmasters. General Evaluator Jim Black reviewed the meeting and called upon Burwell for the grammarian and timer's reports. A short business meeting followed with a discussion of the Anniversary Celebration that was held on June 18. The speakers, Laurel Lillly and Janel Behm were excellent, while the alumnae presentations were also top notch. There will be no meeting on July 5 due to the holiday weekend. The next meeting will be July 12 in the Jr. Home Room at the Tiffin-Seneca Public Library. Guests are always welcome to come to a meeting and learn how Toastmasters can help in interviewing, building confidence and gaining that workplace promotion. Kiwanis Club of Tiffin Dave Spridgeon, owner of The Renaissance of Tiffin, Jolly's, the Pink Lady food truck, party buses, a limo service and, most recently, The Deli on Frost Parkway, was the featured speaker at the June 30 meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Tiffin with 23 in attendance. Chris Wagner and Jodi Burks, Aktion Club members, were guests of Marta Mohr. Dave has a background in law enforcement, has worked in the court system and has been co-owner of The Bourbon Affair in Findlay, an establishment similar to The Renaissance. He opened The Renaissance in 2017. He says he loves the Tiffin community and The Renaissance remains near and dear to his heart. During the time of Covid, he needed to pivot as The Renaissance was not considered "essential" during the lockdowns. In response, he purchased what was to become The Pink Lady Food Truck that allowed for a cash flow into the bar. Dave says The Pink Lady has been amazing. His next purchase was a party bus, which is now constantly booked. Another purchase was a Hummer which serves as a limo and then a second party bus. Next came his purchase of Jolly's from previous owner Diane Hassinger whose grandfather, Roy Jolivette, started the business originally on West Market Street. Diane grew up in the business when her mom and dad ran it. Dave's next business venture came about when Andrew Kalnow approached him about opening a New York-style deli in the former Draperies & Design at 155 Frost Parkway. Work is currently being done for The Frost Parkway Deli with plans to open October 1. Hours will be 7 a.m.–2 p.m. with evenings available for lease for meetings, wedding receptions, parties and the like. Remodeling will include a terrace overlooking the Sandusky River. Next up for Dave are plans for a second Jolly's location on South Sandusky Street that will include carhops. While the downtown Jolly's is open 12 months, this location will be open nine months out of the year. President-elect Tom Schweitzer opened the meeting by leading club members in the Pledge of Allegiance. Andy Wiedemann provided the prayer. Tom asked members to remember former Kiwanis member Percy Lilly's wife Mary, who recently passed away. John Millar read a thank you card from recent Hyatt Scholarship winner Amelia Boes. A thank you card from the other Hyatt Scholarship winner, Jacob Clouse, was read the previous week. Pam Greene said that many families attended Family Fest and it exceeded expectations. Club president Eric Willman and immediate past president Michelle Tuite assisted Pam that evening. Tom Schweitzer reminded everyone of the Fourth of July celebration for Kiwanis and Rotary Club members. Tom and Beth Schweitzer & Lowell and Nancy Forbes celebrated wedding anniversaries. Mark Zeno and Pam Greene celebrated club anniversaries. Jon Beard celebrated his birthday. Pat DeMonte won the 50/50. Seneca County Master Gardener Volunteers President Tim Mannas delivered a presentation on the spotted lanternfly at the June meeting of the Seneca County Master Gardener Volunteers.Mannas talked about the spotted lanternfly's characteristics and life cycle, as well as how to dispose of them and how to report them to the state and the Seneca County Extension Office.Volunteer coordinator Tami Andrews said the new vendor for Ohio State University T-shirts and other items is Ace Productions.Andrews has put a section on Hands On Connect for logging volunteer and education hours spent on the spotted lanternfly. She also reviewed the intern requirements, which are 50 hours of community service at minimum. They can be completed over more than one year at the discretion of the county.Andrews said hybrid training was discussed at the June coordinators' meeting and Jen Andon should be contacted for more information.Andrews also announced that she will be resigning as volunteer coordinator as of October. She suggested that the responsibilities of the position be divided into several sections in the future. She would train anyone interested. Those interested should contact her.The state Master Gardener Volunteers conference is scheduled to be in-person only on Oct. 7 and 8 in Cuyahoga County.Ora and Jean Preston attended a seminar in London, Ohio, and learned that hybrid training is being done there. Also scheduled is a July 13 trip to Schedel Arboretum in Elmore and Chateau Tebeau winery in Helena.Workers are still needed to weed and water at the fairgrounds flower bed. Volunteers should contact Kathy Yost or Marsha Dandar.Sharon Losey reported that the plant sale was successful. Leftover plants were donated to the Seneca County Park District and St. Francis Home.Linda Holman said four applications have been made for the organization's scholarship, to be awarded in July.Pam Biller said the scrapbook committee needs photos from the plant sale.The speakers committee asked that it be notified if members give a presentation to any group about the spotted lanternfly.Losey said she attended the plant sale at Seneca Public Library and talked about the possibility of conducting an educational session for the library on preparing for a plant sale. New Riegel American Legion Commander Justin Elchert opened the June 20 meeting of the New Riegel American Legion at 7:30 p.m. The fifth district officers were present to install the new officers. Commander-elect Darrell Bishop and 1st Vice-elect Marty Moore from Amherst Post 118 installed the legionnaires. Deb Sutterlin installed the auxiliary and Beanie Kessler and Richard Russell installed the S.A.L. A thank you card was received from the Gerald Tiell Family. The July 4th meeting of the Legionnaires has been canceled. The next meeting will be July 18 at 7:30 p.m. Tiffin Historic Trust President Nevin Martin welcomed members and guests to the Tiffin Historic Trust Annual Membership and Awards Dinner Meeting held at the Ironwood Steakhouse on June 16. Curtis King gave the invocation. Following dinner, Matt Wiederhold, the executive director of Heritage Ohio, spoke on "Preservation in Today's Vibrant Communities." Wiederhold has over twenty years' experience working with Main Street communities including the last fifteen in Medina, and has restored numerous historic buildings and homes. He reminded the audience that there is a natural evolution to everything and that what is now old was once new and possibly controversial in its time! Using Medina as an example, Wiederhold described its transformation from being known as "the armpit of America" to a town that now values its historic architecture through adaptive reuse as well as restoration. He advised that to drive the economy of an area, attention must be paid to the ethnicity of a place to preserve a community's arts and culture, not just its buildings. A highlight of the annual meeting is the presentation of the Historic Preservation Awards to acknowledge owners of buildings who have made a significant effort to maintain and preserve Tiffin's historic architecture. Mollie Luidhardt presented this year's Nevin E.B. Martin Award to Robb and Shellie Mack for their home at 498 S. Washington St., which took three years to restore. Doug Collar presented the 2022 Historic Preservation Plaques to three buildings: the Barn at Winterberry Farm at 2721 North State Route 53, owned by Sabrina Schneppat, Bear's Den Tavern at 68 East Perry Street, owned by Gwynn and Dennis Wickert, and The Queen Anne at 25 Adams Street, owned by Andrew and Cindy Kalnow. During the business meeting the membership accepted the recommendations of the Nominations Committee and elected Jacob Price and Jade Wagner as trustees for the term ending 2024, and Doug Collar, Mary Lewis, Joan Martin, Mike Pinkston and Nancy Rubenstein for the three year term expiring in 2025. Officers elected for the 2022-2023 term are president, Nevin Martin; vice president, Jackie Fletcher; treasurer, Mike Pinkston; and secretary, Nancy Rubenstein. The membership also accepted the minutes of the 2021 annual meeting and the proposed budget for 2022-23. Mike Pinkston announced that a Pub Crawl, the first of the online Self-Guided Tours will soon be released for public access. He also reported that the Historic Trust received a gift from Tiffin Metal to electrify the Carriage House. Mary Lewis distributed the Member-to-Member Chamber Benefit Cards. Upcoming events include the Father's Day Garden Tour on June 19, a Halloween Tea on October 8, the Mystery Bourbon Tasting on Oct. 16, the Holiday House Tour on Dec. 4 and the Holiday Chili Supper for members and friends on Dec. 5.
