Tiffin Right to Life Members of Tiffin Right to Life met on July 12, 2022 at their Quarterly Meeting. After opening prayer, minutes of the April meeting and the current Treasurer's report were reviewed and approved. Attorney Kevin Mack spoke extensively about the overturn of Roe v. Wade. The Supreme Court's decision on June 24, 2022 in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization resulted in returning to each State the right to enact laws about whether abortion is legal in their State, and if so, what limits may be placed upon abortion without incurring challenges to the law by the courts. Ohio's Heartbeat Bill is now in effect. The bill was passed in 2019 and signed by Ohio's Governor, but could not be implemented due to a court injunction regarding Roe v. Wade. Ohio's Heartbeat Bill protects preborn babies from abortion when a fetal heartbeat can be detected (beginning at around 6 weeks of pregnancy). Still involved in educating the public and raising awareness for the sanctity of human life from conception until natural death, Tiffin Right to Life is increasing efforts to support pregnant women. Two Seneca County pro-life organizations anticipate increased need for their services since the reversal of Roe v Wade. Following discussion, members voted to approve a $500 donation each to Heartbeat Hope Medical in Tiffin and to Caring Hands Pregnancy Center in Fostoria. Also, 3 new banners with life-affirming messages were purchased for RTL use at their "Voices on the Square" peaceful assembly at 11:30 AM on the 1st Friday of each month near the Justice Center in Tiffin. A bus has been charted to travel to Columbus on Wednesday, October 5, for Ohio's First March for Life to remind Ohio legislators that Tiffin RTL expects them to protect preborn lives in Ohio to the greatest extent possible. Details about the trip will be available in August; reserved seating for pro-life riders will be on a "first come, first served" basis. Tiffin Right to Life will again join other area pro-life groups to staff a booth at the Seneca County Fair. "Heroes and Zeroes," is a new monthly online report designed to hold self-professed Catholics accountable for their public advocacy on life issues. Details are at https://catholicvote.org/cap/heroes-zeroes/. Plans for the annual "Celebrate Life" fundraiser at The Chandelier on October 29th are underway. The menu is set, and the cost of a dinner ticket remains at $25. Maggie Christie of Dayton RTL and President of the Right to Life Action Coalition of Ohio will speak. Election of two officers (President and Secretary) will be discussed in October prior to the vote occurring at the January meeting. Seneca Toastmasters Seneca Toastmasters met in the Jr. Home Room at the Tiffin-Seneca Public Library on July 26 with 3 members and one guest present. President Tom Burwell called the meeting to order and introduced Suzanne Black for the opening and the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. Guest Kevin Roessner provided a joke. Topicmaster Black presented the phrase "Seneca County Fair" to lead off her tabletopics: Jim Black – What is your favorite animal at the Fair? Burwell – Tell us about your first time at the Fair. Roessner – What is your favorite Fair experience. General Evaluator Burwell reviewed the meeting and called upon Jim Black for the timer's report. President Burwell conducted a short business meeting. Due to voting in the Jr. Home Room, the next meeting will be in the Kernan Room on August 2 at 7:00 p.m. Guests are always welcome to learn what Toastmasters can do for you. Kiwanis Club of Tiffin Sara Riesen, a licensed realtor for Century 21 Bolte Real Estate, was the featured speaker for the July 28, 2022 meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Tiffin with 18 in attendance in person plus four joining on Zoom. Sara has been a licensed realtor with the State of Ohio since 2002 and a licensed broker since 2010. She serves on the executive committee for the Firelands Association of Realtors. Sara said that the past two years have been a "really glorious time" to be in real estate. A shortage of homes has resulted in a high demand for housing. When the world was shut down due to Covid restrictions, the real estate market exploded. It was common to have multiple offers on homes. She said the most offers she had on a single home was 13 and the property sold for $40,000 over the asking price. Cash buyers have made up 30 percent of sales with investors playing a huge role because rental rates have skyrocketed. Prices are up 30% nationally and 24% in Seneca County. Eighty-five percent purchased with cash or conventional financing. During the time of Covid restrictions, oftentimes appraisals and home inspections were waived. Sara said it's a great time to be a seller, not so much if you're a buyer and that she was on call more time than usual. Prices have dropped off some. Currently there are 46 properties on the market whereas last year there were only 20. Days on market for houses last month was 14 days. Last July it was just three. Because of a lack of new construction, she expects the strong housing market to continue. Club president Eric Willman opened the meeting by leading club members in the Pledge of Allegiance and Pat DeMonte provided the prayer. Volunteers are needed for the garage sale in August. Contact Gene Chintala or Pat DeMonte if you can help. A summer picnic is being planned for September. The Kiwanis Foundation Annual Meeting will take place at the noon meeting on Aug. 11. Marta and Bryan Mohr celebrated their wedding anniversary. Marguerite Bernard celebrated her club anniversary. Jill Gosche and Melanie Frederick celebrated birthdays. Tom Schweitzer won the 50/50. Tiffin Area Chapter of The Compassionate Friends Dear Loving Parents, We of the Compassionate Friends were very sorry to learn of the death of your child and we extend our deepest sympathy to you. We are a support group composed of parents who have experienced the death of a child of any age from any cause. Our purpose is to promote a positive resolution of grief by our willingness to listen and share through our chapter programs. At our meetings you will find someone to talk to who understands your feelings and will ofer their friendship. Some feel hesitant about attending the first time. However, most parents find mutual support and continue to attend. The meetings provide an opportunity to share ideas that have been helpful to others in cooping with their loss. Our chapter meets the third Thursday of each month at Trinity United Church of Christ in Tiffin which is across from the public library. Please enter at the back of the church through the parking lot doors. There will be someone there to direct you to the meeting room. The meeting starts at 6:45 p.m. and is generally over around 8:30 p.m. There is time for discussion and sharing during the meeting but no o ne is required to speak if they are not comfortable doing so. A newsletter is published quarterly to keep parents informed of meeting topics and chapter activities. Some newsletters will also include articles or poems written by bereaved parents. We have an extensive lending library that may be accessed anytime, even if you are unable to attend a meeting. There are no dues or cost for participating in our group or for the use of materials.
