Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Jane Washington Chapter Regent Sharon Casey called the Sept. 8, 2022 meeting of the Jane Washington Chapter DAR to order at the Kaubisch Memorial Public Library, Fostoria, Ohio. Eleven members attended. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited as well as the DAR Ritual and The American's Creed. Chaplain Judy Lamberjack gave a brief devotional. Judy Schreck presented the National Defense moment. The President General's message for the month was read by Vice Regent Brittany Cook. Regent Casey reported we have a new President General, Pamela Rouse Wright and the new theme for her administration is "Celebrate Stars and Stripes Forever!". Judy Myerholtz presented a slide show program from our 100th Anniversary event in May. She spoke of the highlights of this event for those unable to attend. Discussion was held on collecting books for the literacy project, both adult and children's books. Domestic violence shelters in Fostoria and Findlay are both interested in receiving books. Forty-one new greeting cards were collected for distribution to veterans' facilities. Registrar Marilyn Stinehart reported on the pending application of one new member. She is also collecting canceled U.S. postage stamps which will be distributed to disabled American veterans' groups for occupational therapy. Regent Casey reminded the group of the NSDAR National Day of Service on October 11, 2022. She asked everyone to continue recording their volunteer service hours to be turned in at the end of the year. The next meeting will be Oct. 13, 2022. If interested in learning more about the DAR and becoming a member of the Jane Washington Chapter, please contact Marilyn at 419-934-2547. 10th Annual Tiffin-Seneca United Way Golf Outing The event which took place at Clinton Heights, on Saturday, September 10th featured 22 teams! Dave Spridgeon-Jolly's sponsored lunch and plenty of fun was had at the famous skirt hole, cornhole, prize wheel, and pink ball contest and we couldn't have done it without our outstanding volunteers! Prize winners included First place "I Like Big Putts and I Cannot Lie" followed by "Same Day Signs" in second place and in third place was "TPC." Door prizes were donated by Fastenal, Old Fort Bank, Allen Eiry, Highlife Recovery, SCAT, Pyramid Recruiting, Carmie's, Edward Jones-Tiffin Offices, 4-H, Knot Splinters, YMCA, Thrivent, QT2, Loan Depot – Brian Bower, Your Legacy Federal Credit Union, Magnificent Maid, Advanced Environmental Pest Solutions, and Kesler & Co. Beerco sponsored the cornhole game, Clouse Construction sponsored the prize wheel, Impact Credit Union sponsored breakfast and Old Fort Bank sponsored dessert. Todd Steen with The Social Cigar set up at the turn and donated all proceeds back to the United Way. A special thank you to Clinton Heights and their staff for making the event possible. Tiffin Rotary President Anne Lange DeVine opened the Sept. 6 meeting at Camden Falls. Rev. Phil Moerdyk gave an opening prayer. Amber Stover reported that her committee is finalizing a member survey which will be sent out to the club soon. Joel Ardner noted that there are several service opportunities coming up, including the Heritage Festival, the Sandusky River Clean-up and our own Jack Wangler Golf Outing. Janet Herzog also asked for volunteers for the Golf Outing. She also encouraged non-golfers to attend the steak dinner for $35. She has to know by Sept. 19. Keith reported that our District was busy helping flood victims in Kentucky and Mississippi. If you want to help, check out the District website. Phil Moerdyk asked for someone to step up and volunteer to be the Foundation's treasurer. Student Guests today were Ava Lucius and Selena Steinhauser. Misty Schnipke was with Leanne Smith and David Warner was with Dave Spridgeon. Mike Klepper hosted Mitch, Katie and Toria Felton. Celebrating birthdays this week are Leanne Smith, Beth Schweitzer, Rachal Tate and Janet Shutt. The Basket Fund raised $22. The Weekly Drawing and the Free Lunch were both won by Joel Ardner. Anne introduced Mitch Felton, co-chair of the Alzheimer Walk in Seneca County. Mitch noted that fellow Rotarian Mike Klepper is his co-chair and this is his third year helping out. He said the Walk will be Sept. 24 at Tiffin University. He then introduced Erica Parsinari, Walk Manager for Tiffin, Sandusky and Mansfield. Erica said that she watched her Mom deal with her Mother suffering through Alzheimers. She said that the Northwest Ohio office overs 24 counties and raises funding for (1) Care Support, like their 24/7 Support Line and their online Alzheimer Connect, (2) Care and Concern educational workshops, (3) Research—they have raised $235 in 39 countries, and (4) Advocacy. Erica went on to report that there are more than 100 types of dementia, but Alzheimers in #1. While we are all at risk of getting Alzheimers, women, African American and Hispanic people seem to have a greater propensity to acquire it. Of course, age, prior brain injuries and family history also put you at greater risk. Erica then explained that Rotary is a big supporter. In 2018, these Rotary Action Groups they provided 80 teams that raised $80,000. She would love to see Tiffin Rotary get a team organized. Their goal for the Tiffin Walk is $60,000 with 35 teams and 235 participants. The Felton and Klepper families are also hosting a dinner and auction at Buffalo Wild Wings on September 14th . Seneca Toastmasters #1845 Seneca Toastmasters #1845 met on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. in the Kernan Room at the Tiffin-Seneca Public Library with 7 members present. President Tom Burwell opened the meeting and introduced Jim Black as Toastmaster for the evening. Black called upon Suzanne Black for the opening and Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. Jim Black continued as Humorist and told a short story. Topicmaster John Curtin presented the word "disabused" meaning to persuade someone that an idea or belief is mistaken. He continued with the following topics: Burwell – Have you changed your mind over the years on the legality of marijuana? Jim Black – What one priority of yours may have changed over the years? Jessica Lang – Tell us your reaction when you learned the truth about Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. Suzanne Black – There is an old saying, "don't judge a person until you have walked a mile in their shoes." Has that ever been brought home to you? Laurel Lilly—Do you recall meeting a person for the first time and having an impression that was later changed? Ellen Drake – Can you remember a food that you disliked as a child that you now like? Jessica Lang gave her Ice Breaker Speech entitled, "My Animals and Me". General Evaluator Burwell commented on the meeting, then called upon Lilly to evaluate Lang's speech. Drake provided the Grammarian report and Lilly provided the Timer's report. President Burwell conducted a short business meeting. Treasurer Black reminded everyone that dues are due at the next meeting. An update on the Pathways program is planned for the next meeting. Curtin provided the closing thoughts. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, Sept. 27 in the Jr. Home Room at the Tiffin-Seneca Public Library. Guests are always welcome to visit and learn about Toastmasters. Leadership Seneca Class of 2023 Leadership Seneca County kicked off with 22 new class participants on Sept. 14 at Camp Glen. Class members, along with their sponsors, enjoyed a light breakfast reception, where they were welcomed by Arrin Allen, LSC Board President, Kim Radison, LSC Coordinator, and LSC board members. Camp staff then led participants through morning team building activities and provided lunch. Previous class graduates met with the class in the afternoon, sharing their class projects including Ready Set Go Safety buckets, Blessing Boxes, and the Opportunity Park. The class finished the day touring Camp Glen and discussing potential class projects. The class will meet again in October to focus on learning more about the 200 year history of our county. Jack Houck reported broom sales of $183 and sales of $135 previously at the Farmers Market. Steve Cochie stated food ordered for the Heritage Festival. Increased costs will make hot dogs-$3, bologna sandwiches-$6, pickles and pickled eggs-$1. Al Karcher reported 210 used eye glasses picked up at four places. A Low Vision unit was picked up at Tiffin-Seneca Public Library as a newer unit was donated by a patron totaling 3 1/2 hours worked. Dave Fisher announced the Lions Park Gazebo will be placed on a cement pad where table is currently. Need help to move table and paving bricks to a different area of park. November will be month of construction. Steve Fisher reminded members Sept. 21 at 6 p.m. is Highway clean up on SR 18. Pilot Dogs will be at Attica Fairgrounds, 7 p.m., Sept. 21. Seneca County Master Gardener Volunteers President Tim Mannas opened the Sept. 13 General Meeting of the Seneca County Master Gardener Volunteers. Marsha Dandar provided the treasurers report. Tami Andrews, Volunteer Coordinator, reported the changes in the position that will take place upon her resignation. Jennifer Kerr will manage the Sales Force and Hands-On-Connect records, Steve Detillion will attend the monthly recorded meeting and provide the organization with the shared information, and the secretary, currently Linda Detillion, will be responsible for all the emails to be forwarded to the membership from various county MGV groups and from the Ohio State University MGV Extension. Marsha and Kathy Yost reminded the group that there is a work day on Sept. 19 at 9 a.m. to work at further cleanup of the flower beds at the fairgrounds. Also, Oct. 17 at 9 a.m. we will close the bed for winter. Sharon Losey requests assistance in cleaning pots for next year's plant sale. Tim shared that Charlie Huth needs help with the Resource Line. The Scholarship Committee is sending out the applications to guidance counselors in order to be able to award the scholarship prior to graduation. A reminder to record your hours of Spotted Lanternfly monitoring in HOC was requested by Tim. The Grow Ohio program continues. Send numbers and pounds of produce donated to charitable organizations to Deb Brickner. Under new business, election of officers will be in November. The MGV Christmas Potluck will be on Monday, Dec. 12 at the Seneca Co. Fairgrounds. A short meeting will start at 5 p.m. and dinner to follow at 5:15 p.m. There will be no monthly meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 13. Members and one guest are invited to the potluck. Table service, bottled water, and comradery of the finest gardeners in Seneca County will be provided. There will be a $25 door prize for some lucky person. Fort Ball Antique Club Fort Ball Antique Club hosted the September meeting in the Junior Home Room at Tiffin-Seneca Public Library. The business meeting was conducted by Barbara Bond. Newly appointed Treasurer Carol Reinhart also attended. The new booklets done by Jan Roby, secretary, were presented to the members. The upcoming programs planned for the remainder months of 2022 and the 2023 year were reviewed and discussed. Refreshments were served by Barbara Bond, Char Distel, and Jan Roby. The October meeting will be at Winterberry Farm and the program given by Sabrina Schneppat. Darlene Laubender and Nancy Wertz will be hosts. Area Seniors Activity ProfessionalArea Seniors Activity Professionals met for their Sept. 12 2022 meeting at Buffalo Wild Wings in Tiffin, Ohio with President Karen Simonds in charge of arrangements. Simonds distributed packets for this year's agenda and the membership roster. Treasurer June Huss reminded the group that it's time to pay this year's dues. Diane Culver, Executive Director of the Allen Eiry Center gave an update on some upcoming events for the Center. Mary Lee Creeger provided information on SOLO (Supporting Our Loved Ones). The support group meets the third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Allen Eiry Senior Center. Sherry Runion and Brittany Brugger, Autumnwood Care Center shared some programs from the summer and upcoming fall events. Sister Veronica shared the Activity Professional Anthem with the group. Amber Lantz, Brethren Court Activity Director and Event Coordinator at Good Shepherd Home shared feedback on the recent Fun-K event held at Good Shepherd Home. Over 100 residents, volunteers, family members and staff took part in the event. Special guests included Fostoria Mayor Eric Keckler and State Representative Gary Glick. This year's officers include Karen Simonds, President, Kathy Theis Vice-President, June Huss Treasurer and Cindy Swartz Secretary. The next ASAP meeting will be Thursday, Oct. 6 for the annual retreat at the Blueberry Patch in Mansfield, Ohio. Susie Smith, Seniors on the Go Transportation Coordinator is in charge of arrangements for the retreat. Door prizes were won by Smith, Swartz and Sister Veronica.
