SAD: signs, symptoms and treatments

Many people have heard the term seasonal affective disorder, also known as "SAD." But what is it, and how can you deal with it? The National Alliance on Mental Illness website describes the disorder as consisting of "recurrent episodes of depression in late fall and winter, alternating with periods of normal mood the rest of the year." The website also states that "the National Institutes of Mental Health were the first to suggest this condition was a response to decreased light and experimented with the use of bright light to address the symptoms. "Scientists have identified that the neurotransmitter serotonin may not be working optimally in many people who experience this disorder." The classic symptoms of SAD are oversleeping, daytime fatigue, overeating, weight gain and craving carbohydrates, according to NAMI. People may also experience decreased sexual interest, lethargy, hopelessness, suicidal thoughts and lack of interest in usual activities and decreased socialization. "We encourage our residents to learn the signs and symptoms of these seasonal depression patterns and reach out for help when needed," said Robin Reaves, Deputy Director of the Mental Health Board of Seneca, Ottawa, Sandusky and Wyandot Counties. "Preventive measures early in the season can help lower the impact later on into the season, and we recommend taking steps as soon as any mild symptoms are realized." "This season could be especially hard for persons with depression as COVID has added an extra layer of challenges, so we encourage people to get help early," she said. Treatment of the disorder may involve a combination of antidepressant medications, cognitive behavioral therapy and exercise, according to NAMI. The condition has also been treated with light therapy — regular, daily exposure to a "lightbox," which artificially simulates high-intensity sunlight. NAMI stresses that regular indoor lighting is not sufficient to treat the disorder.
