Prosecutor wants teen charged as an adult in stabbing death

NORWALK — Prosecutors filed a motion Monday afternoon to have a Norwalk teen accused of fatally stabbing his father tried as an adult. A 16-year-old boy accused of stabbing his father to death on Saturday made his initial appearance at the Huron County Juvenile Court and was charged with murder, according to court administrator Chris Mushett. "The prosecutor filed a motion to have the case bound over to Norwalk Municipal Court and to have him tried as an adult for murder," Mushett said. A date for the hearing has not yet been scheduled. Mushett said these types of hearings normally happen within a few weeks. The teen was ordered to remain in the custody of the Seneca County Juvenile Detention Center until further notice. The boy appeared via Zoom from the detention center, Mushett said. Present in court were the juvenile's mother, his uncle, the prosecutor, a court-appointed attorney and a representative from victim's services, according to Mushett. Mushett said the juvenile is alleged to have purposely caused the death of Joeby Reed by plunging a large knife into his upper left chest. "The judge made sure he (the juvenile) knew what the charges were and the consequences associated with them," Mushett said. According to Norwalk police chief Dave Smith, the boy's mother called police to the first block of E. Washington St., Norwalk, at 11:19 p.m. and police arrived on the scene at 11:20 p.m. Norwalk fire and North Central EMS arrived shortly after that. When officers arrived, the teen was taken into custody and Reed was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. He had suffered a stab wound to the chest. Smith said after processing the scene and ensuring everyone was safe, detectives secured a search warrant and located the knife believed to be the murder weapon. "Immediately after getting to the scene and helping the victim, the Norwalk Detective Bureau was called in and started investigating the scene." Smith said his understanding of the situation is that the mother and father were in an argument and the juvenile intervened. The chief said he was not aware of any past problems with the suspect. He added their were no previous police involvement with the family. Smith said this is the first murder in Norwalk since 2015.
