It has to be obvious. The old way of explaining it was "workhorse" or "show horse." Some people work hard at a public job like Congressional Representative and others "show off" or worse profit from it in questionable ways. A little looking and you can tell. Take Marcy Kaptur. One of the hardest workers in Congress. You may not agree with all the policies she works to support, but you can't miss the fact that she works her tail off. That she has been at the job for many years ought to count in her favor. She's really good at it. If you take the job seriously like she does you learn a lot over time and get more effective. Maybe she should retire but I say thank God she's still at it. We need more like her. And don't, because a few of her "causes" aren't your "flavor," overlook how much of what she does is seeing that the normal and important tasks of governing are carried out in a fair and efficient way. And since she is clearly working for what she believes is in the best interest of the people in her district, and she is experienced and smart, it may make sense to reevaluate the policies over which you and she actually disagree. Being a Congress person is not a holiday. At least for the workhorses. Your vote is partly a way to say, "Thank you."
