Mercy Health to expand birthing center in Tiffin

TIFFIN --- To better meet community needs, Mercy Health is planning a $3.1 million expansion of its labor and delivery space at Tiffin's hospital. As the region's only hospital to be named to Newsweek's 2020 list of Best Maternity Care Hospitals, a mercy news release said the Tiffin hospital remains committed to providing nationally-recognized care close to home. The expansion to the existing unit will allow for three additional rooms to provide care for area mothers, newborns and their families, the release said. Construction at the Mercy Health - Tiffin Hospital Family Birthing Center is set to begin next spring and is expected to last about 12 months. "For nearly 110 years, Mercy Health -Tiffin Hospital has provided the highest quality of care to the Seneca County region, including to generations of mothers and their babies," Bob Baxter, president, Mercy Health - Toledo said in the release. "Coupled with our expert team of physicians and nurses, this investment in the hospital solidifies Mercy Health's commitment to the health of our area families." The Tiffin hospital family birthing center provides maternity services to nearly 800 families each year, the release said. "Expertly trained labor and delivery teams ensure that mothers and babies receive the highest level of care throughout their stay," the release said. "Additionally, our private rooms are equipped with the most advanced equipment to ensure the safety of mother and baby." For families that require a higher level of care, the release said there will be a seamless transition in partnership with Mercy Health - St. Vincent Medical Center, a Level IV regional perinatal health care center, where the most complex maternal conditions are treated. "Women choose Mercy Health - Tiffin Hospital Family Birthing Center because they know they will receive quality, compassionate care along with a positive birthing experience," said Wesley Hedges, medical director for the local labor and delivery department. "With this latest expansion, we will be able to provide the highest level of care for even more mothers in an environment that prioritizes their privacy, safety and comfort during this special time." Carmen Doty-Armstrong, doctor in obstetrics and gynecology, agreed. "The expansion will help us provide more families with the experience of patient-centered care right here in the communities in which they live," she said. "As a mother, I understand the cares and concerns of women, before, during and after pregnancy and I look forward to continued care of our families close to home." Mercy Health - Tiffin Hospital is an acute care facility offering primary care and specialty physicians, robotic surgery, women's care, inpatient, outpatient and emergency care. In addition to the expansion of birthing services, the release said the hospital continues to invest in technological advancements – including the most advanced surgical robots – to provide the highest quality of care long into the future.
