Basketball tournament honors fallen officer

Editor's note: Joe Biggs represents the only Fremont police officer to have been killed in the line of duty. He was killed on Nov. 3, 1948. FREMONT — I'm excited to announce the first-ever Joe Biggs Memorial Basketball tournament coming to Fremont on March 25-26. Myself, North Coast Showtime basketball, the Fremont Police Department and the Fremont Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 35 are coming together to honor fallen Fremont police Officer George Joseph "Joe" Biggs. Officer Biggs is the only Fremont police officer to ever die in the line of duty protecting and serving the citizens of Fremont. To honor Officer Biggs' ultimate sacrifice, community members are coming together to create the Joe Biggs Memorial tournament. All proceeds from the tournament will go toward some improvements at Biggs-Kettner Park (Eastside Park). We are hoping to make this an annual event with proceeds going back into the community. I want to thank Cody Bischoff, our recreation director; John and Lindi Cahill of North Coast Showtime; Derek Wensinger, the Fremont police chief; Barth Downie, the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 35 president; and Scott Miller, Sandusky County commissioner for their time and efforts in planning the tournament. We are seeking $250 sponsorships from individuals and or businesses to have your name or logo on the T-shirts sold at the event with additional recognition.
