After a scoreless first inning, Calvert ramped up the offense with five runs in the bottom of the second and then a 10-run third to run away from Vanlue 17-0 in five innings to open the season Monday.Blake Coleman hit two singles and drove in four runs for the Senecas (1-0), while Cash Lee singles and drove in three runs, Mason Johnson blasted a home run (2 RBIs), Nick Palm and AJ Shoemaker singled and drove in a pair of runs and John Schumacher singled and drove in a run.Vanlue was limited to just one hit as TJ Rickle singled.Calvert used one pitcher for each of the five innings as Shoemaker got the start, striking out the side, just like Jacob Kidwell, Harry Shultz and Lee did after him. Huge 5th frame fuels LakotaKANSAS – Woodmore scored first, but Lakota scored last and in a big way with a 10-run fifth inning to run-rule the Wildcats 12-1.Cody Biddle led Lakota (1-0) with three hits (2B) and three RBIs. Jayson Bennington followed with a single and two RBIs, while Mitch McDaid doubled and drove in a run and Chase Dussel and Carson Hill both ended with a single and an RBI.Dussel went all five innings on the bump for the Raiders. Flyers blank ChieftainsBASCOM – Kole Maxwell kept Hopewell-Loudon in check Monday as he allowed a single hit in four innings, while striking out 10 in a 13-0 Norwalk St. Paul victory.The Flyers led 1-0 after an inning, 2-0 after three innings, but then put up 11 more runs in the next two.Maxwell also had a big game at the plate with two hits, including a home run, with four RBIs. Landon Fries followed with three singles, Ben Burger singled twice and drove in two runs, Alex Weaver singled twice and drove in a run and Drew Kuhle doubled and drove in a run.H-L (0-1) had just two total hits as Jack Colatruglio and Thomas Daniel both singled.Caine McDonald got the start on the bump, and he took the loss. Rams come up short vs. BobcatsUPPER SANDUSKY – Upper Sandusky started well Monday with a 1-0 lead after an inning hosting Kenton in non-league play. It just couldn't sustain it. Kenton responded with three runs in the second and then five more for an 8-4 win.Kaden Holman led the Rams (0-1) with three singles at the plate, while Jackson Smalley singled and drove in a run.Degan Eldridge took the loss on the hill, allowing five runs (two earned) on three hits in four innings. Falcons hold off Blue DevilsCAREY – Down 6-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Carey made things interesting scoring two runs and then having runners in scoring position to tie or win the game with two outs. However, Riverdale escaped with a 6-5 win to open the season."It was an opening-day battle. The stats were similar, but they made a couple more plays than we did," Carey coach Eric Mullholand said. "I like our fights at the end, and (Ethan Burton) was tough on the mound. We needed one more timely hit or one less mistake on defense to win."All with two outs in the seventh, Burton got on base with a single, Kasen Sherman doubled and Conner Norden singled in both of them. He struck out five and walked three. Flashes strike lateCLYDE – With Cole Schwochow on the hill Clyde was rolling in its opener Monday hosting Willard. The Fliers led 2-0 through four innings. Willard then tallied a run in the fifth and then won the game with a pair of runs in the seventh to steal a 3-2 win.The Fliers committed six errors.Clyde (0-1) had just three hits as Mason Gurney had two singles and Barry Criswell ended with a single.Schwochow went 4 2/3 innings giving up an unearned run on two hits as he struck out 12 and walked just two. Dawson Kinsey took the loss, allowing two unearned runs on two hits in 2 1/3 innings of work. Orians' walk-off 1B lifts Blue DevilsCAREY – Riverdale took a 2-1 lead through five innings Monday, but Carey took the the game to extra innings with the tying run in the bottom of the seventh and then Kyla Orians delivered a walk-off single to propel the Blue Devils to a season-opening 3-2 win over the Falcons.Carey had just three hits off of Addie Farmer, but Rylee Row had two of them (2B). Meghan Littlejohn drove in a run.For Riverdale, Haidyn Thacker (RBI) and Farmer each tallied two hits.Kenzie Simons struck out 15 for Carey in the circle. She went all eight innings, allowing two runs on six hits and just three walks. Farmer gave up an earned run on three hits with 11 punchouts and seven walks in seven frames. Chieftains ground FlyersBASCOM – Norwalk St. Paul struck first with a run in the top of the first, but that certainly didn't bother Hopewell-Loudon.The Chieftains responded with six runs in the second and seven in the third in a 14-2 run-rule win.Shea Harper (2-2B), Isabelle Beidelschies (2B) and Brynn Sendelbach (3B) all had two hits and two RBIs for the Chieftains (1-0), while Taryn Hampton tripled and drove in a run.Beidelschies start in the circle and went 3 1/3 innings. She gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits, while fanning eight and walking one. Sendelbach pitched as well, striking out four. Tigers rout Senecas 14-4HURON – Calvert began the 2023 campaign with a trip to play Huron Monday and it didn't go well with a 14-4 loss.Selah Moyer suffered the loss in the circle. She also had a single at the plate for Calvert, while Hannah Miller added a single and three RBIs and Kayleigh Concepcion was 1 for 1 and scored twice. Raiders run-rule WildcatsKANSAS – It was a good start to the season for Lakota's offense as the Raiders compiled 11 hits in a 13-3 five-inning win over Woodmore to begin the season.Lexi Moon led the onslaught with a double, two singles and three RBIs. Lakota (1-0) also got a double, a single and three RBIs from Grace Harmon, two singles from Elizabeth Strawman, a single and two RBIs by Kailynn Smith and a single and an RBI from Kerstyn Carr.Carr was the winning pitcher, allowing three runs on four hits in five innings of work. She struck out two and didn't issue a walk. Cameran Quisno took the loss for the Wildcats.Emmaleigh Lawrence doubled and drove in a pair of runs for Woodmore. Rams roll by Kenton 11-1UPPER SANDUSKY – Upper Sandusky scored early and often against Kenton Monday as it jumped out to a 4-0 advantage after an inning. The Rams (1-0) compiled 13 hits as Hannah Plymale had three of them, Madison Hart (2 RBIs) and Payton Kennedy (RBI) each had two hits, Alyse Swartz and Erin Merriman each singled and drove in a pair of runs and Ella Frombaugh finished with a single and an RBI. US opens season with sweepUPPER SANDUSKY – It was a rough night for tennis, but Upper Sandusky battled the elements for a 5-0 season-opening win over Kenton Monday.At singles play, Upper Sandusky's No. 1 Holden Daris topped Seth Manns 6-0, 6-1, while No. 2 Sam Smith defeated Mitchell Stephens 6-0, 6-3 and No. 3 Abe Baldwin blanked Austin Chen 6-0, 6-0. It was slightly more competitive in doubles, but still two easy wins for the Rams.The No. 1 duo of Owen Gottfried and Harris Hill dropped Camden Hicks and Adam Coffman 6-3, 6-4 and the No. 2 team of Jackson Gottfried and Daniel Engle upended Carter Hale and JJ Manns 6-0, 6-3.
