Chief Deputy Charles Boyer

National Police Week takes place the week of May 15 every year. This year National Police Week is May 14 – May 20. According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, in 1962, President John Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. In honor of National Police Week, the A-T interviewed local law enforcement to shine a light on the men and women of Tiffin Police Department and Seneca County Sheriff's Office. The A-T spoke with Seneca County Sheriff Chief Deputy Charles Boyer. Boyer is originally from Bellevue. He came to Tiffin with his wife over 30 years ago for Boyer to take a position with Tiffin Police Department. He started at the department as a patrolman and in 1994 Boyer moved to the Detective Bureau to handle general investigations. Boyer then moved to Seneca County Drug Task Force – METRICH Enforcement Unit and became the commander of the drug unit in 1999. In 2021, he retired from Tiffin Police Department and Seneca County Drug Task Force to follow Sheriff Fred Stevens. Stevens had been the chief of Tiffin Police Department before being elected as Seneca County Sheriff. At the Sheriff's Office Boyer came into his current position of chief deputy. He is a graduate of Bellevue High School and earned a degree in criminal justice. Boyer has three children and five grandchildren. Boyer said he entered law enforcement to make a difference in others' lives. He expressed that as he entered law enforcement, he found fulfillment and purpose in his own life. "One of the most rewarding and satisfying aspects of being in Law Enforcement is the unique opportunity to help people get out of a bad situation, get back on their feet, and ultimately turn their lives around," Boyer told the A-T. "Millions of acts of kindness are committed each year by police officers, and I am proud to be one of them who serves our community." "When you realize that you have more years behind you than you do in front of you, it seems to change your perspective in life," Boyer said of his free time. "I work on staying physically fit, mentally fit, and spiritually fit to assist with longevity on being on this earth a little longer to enjoy time with my kids and grandkids. And I throw in a little golf, here and there." In addition to his role as chief deputy, Boyer teaches at the police academy and said when he speaks to new cadets, he tells them that he sincerely and genuinely loves his job. "A Law Enforcement career can be very rewarding if you allow it to be, even during our toughest times," he explained. "Especially if you find your own 'purpose' in what you choose to do with your Law Enforcement career. It's certainly been a fun and interesting ride."
