National Police Week takes place the week of May 15 every year. This year National Police Week is May 14 – May 20. According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, in 1962, President John Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. In honor of National Police Week, the A-T interviewed local law enforcement to shine a light on the men and women of Tiffin Police Department and Seneca County Sheriff's Office. The A-T spoke to Tiffin Police Department Officer Andrew Stevens. Stevens is from Tiffin and went through the Tiffin City School system, graduating from Columbian in 2007. He has also taken criminal justice courses through the Community College of the Air Force while on active duty. Further, he has taken courses at Terra State Community College and Tiffin University. "I joined policing after doing several ride-alongs after high school with Tiffin PD," Stevens told the A-T. "Seeing the ability to provide a positive impact in the community or for an individual and that impact being instantaneous was alluring to me. Whether it was an arrest after someone was just a victim of a crime causing them to now feel safer or being there for someone when they are at their lowest point and needed someone to talk to is the most rewarding part of this career." He said one of the favorite parts of his job includes the ever-changing nature of it. He explained that no day is like the last or even from one call to the next. "You can be dispatched to a similar call as you have previously been to in the past and the experience is vastly different and needs to be handled in a different matter than the last," Stevens said. "There is always a new technique or training to utilize to meet the challenge." In his free time, Stevens enjoys spending time with friends and family. He also attends his children's sporting and school events. He and his family go on walks and hikes along with their two corgis.
