Former Camp Pittenger plans open house Friday

MCCUTCHENVILLE --- Anyone with a history or interest in the former Camp Pittenger, now Northwestern Ohio Christian Youth Camp, is invited to an open house at the camp 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday. The camp address is 8877 TR 131, McCutchenville. Also, camp personnel are looking for people, clubs or businesses who might be interested in forming partnerships, helping explore grant opportunities and similar topics. The camp wants to continue to use the grounds to continue its mission of making friends, enjoying nature and offering positive experiences by connecting with the past, embracing the present and paving the way to a bright, impactful future. Founded in 1937 as "Camp Sandusky" along the Sandusky River, the property was purchased in 1940 by Tiffin YMCA and named Camp Pittenger. The camp changed hands again in 1978 and become NWOCYC. Over the years, the camp has served youth and adults and the grounds have remained much the same as a time capsule into the past. The owners are researching its history of serving disabled children and adults through the Easter Seals program as well as 4-H, Girl Scouts and YMCA camps. Camp personnel are hoping to find people who attended camp before 1978 and would enjoy a walk down memory lane. Lunch will be served and reservations are required.
