In 1974, President Gerald Ford designated the third week in May as EMS Week to honor EMS clinicians and the important work they do in our nation's communities, according to ems.gov. National EMS Week 2023— May 21-27 —marks our 49th year of this special week set aside to celebrate the EMS profession and its dedicated providers. The A-T spoke with Tiffin Fire/Rescue Captain Jon Nutter in honor of National EMS Week. Nutter is from Tiffin and graduated from Mohawk High School. He attended some courses at Tiffin University before joining the Reynoldsburg Fire Department. He then came to Tiffin Fire/Rescue Division where he then attended the Ohio Fire Academy. According to Nutter, back when he got into fire and EMS services, there was no training requirement to start at the department. Usually, a person would be hired and then receive training after. He had been at Tiffin Fire/Rescue for about a year before he received his certifications. All other training Nutter has received has been in-house. When he first began his career in the department, it was only a fire department. Once EMT services were brought to the division, Nutter received his EMT basic training. Nutter has been with the department for 30 years. "Initially, I was working in carpentry," he explained. "I learned that fire departments were interested in hiring carpenters, so I thought it would be an interesting thing to try out. I looked into it and tried it out." Nutter told the A-T his favorite part of the job is the people that he works with. "I'm two years from retiring," he said. "There is no question that the people will be the part I miss the most. There is camaraderie here and a sense of family that I will definitely miss." In his free time, Nutter enjoys carpentry, home projects and spending time with family. He said his favorite project is restoring wooden boats. Nutter recently became a grandfather who he said is a joy in his life. He also spends time with his children. "I want the public to know that when they express their gratitude to us, we truly appreciate it," Nutter explained. "It truly is valued how much we are appreciated."
