Three FC standouts earn district softball first team

Fourteen area players were recognized on the All-Northwest District softball teams, as announced recently by the Ohio High School Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association. In Division IV, three area Firelands Conference standouts earned first team recognition. Monroeville teammates Abbi Poths and Camryn Hurst were both first team for the Eagles. A senior pitcher, Hurst was 18-3 with a 1.90 earned run average in 23 starts for Monroeville (23-6, 12-2). She struck out 104 batters and allowed just 14 walks in 129 innings this season. A junior shortstop, Poths hit .456 with 19 doubles, one triple and 30 RBIs. The NCAA Div. II University of Findlay commit was also the co-Firelands Conference Player of the Year after helping the Eagles to a second straight league title. Plymouth's Chloe Trine was also a first team selection in the outfield. Trine batted 562 this season, finishing with 54 hits. She had three doubles, four triples, one home run and 13 RBIs. She also stole 29 bases and scored 48 runs for the Big Red (16-11, 8-6), who won a district championship for a third time in nine years this season. Earning second team honors in Div. IV at pitcher included Plymouth senior Makenzie Back (2.30 ERA, 278 Ks) and New London junior Emilee Rowland (2.05 ERA, 199 Ks). At catcher, New London sophomore Madison Rowland (.447, 5 HRs, 12 RBIs) and Monroeville sophomore Avery Rosser (.424, 20 RBIs) were also second team. Freshman first baseman Gracie Thomas was also on the second team for New London. Area honorable mention selections in Div. IV also included South Central senior pitcher Hannah Ayers, Plymouth senior catcher Bree Fellows, Plymouth junior infielder Jaylin Branham and Monroeville sophomore infielder Taryn Tyler. In Div. II, Norwalk junior pitcher Haley Gockstetter earned honorable mention. A junior, Gockstetter finished with 182 strikeouts and 34 walks to go with a 2.83 ERA this season in 126 2/3 innings of work. In Div. III, Edison senior outfielder Kalli Quillen was a second team selection.
