Five area teams in line for playoffs

COLUMBUS — The Ohio High School Athletic Association released the official weekly football computer ratings Tuesday. The computer ratings are released every Tuesday beginning in the fifth week of the season, leading up to the final report on Oct. 22, when 448 schools — the top 16 in each region — will qualify for the playoffs. The top eight teams in each region will host a first round playoff game, while the top four have the potential to host two rounds. Entering Week 6, five area teams are in line for playoff berths, with two more just on the outside looking in. In Division VI Region 22, Western Reserve (5-0) sits atop the region after its best start to a season since 2010. The Roughriders visit St. Paul (2-3) in a key Firelands Conference game on Saturday in Norwalk. In Div. V Region 18, Edison (5-0) is the No. 4 team in the region. The Chargers are also off to their best start in seven years, and have a key game for not only the SBC Bay Division, but for computer points when they host Bellevue (3-2) on Friday. The Redmen are third in Div. IV Region 14. Also in Region 18, Willard (4-1) is 13th ahead of its game on Friday at Lakota. In Div. III Region 10, Norwalk (2-3) is 19th. The Truckers will look to move closer to the top 16 when they host Vermilion (3-2) on Friday. The Sailors are ninth in Region 14. In Div. VII Region 25, three area teams are in playoff contention. Monroeville (4-1) is seventh and will host No. 8 Lucas (3-2) on Friday at Marsh Field. After consecutive wins, St. Paul has crept up to 16th ahead of Saturday's game against the Roughriders. Just behind the Flyers in 17th is Plymouth (2-3), which entertains Mapleton (3-2) on Friday. There are 711 schools in this week's 11-player football computer ratings. The 72 largest schools are in Division I, while the remaining schools are divided equally in Divisions II through VII (approximately 106 schools in each division).
