Norwalk rolls; Spettle makes OHSAA record book

ORANGE TWP. — Freshman Claire Spettle's first high school season has become one for the record books. Quite literally. The Norwalk girls soccer standout scored five goals for the Truckers (12-2) in Monday's 7-1 non-league win over host Mapleton (10-3) in a matchup of two teams with double-digit wins. Spettle eclipsed the 40-goal mark with the five tallies on Monday, giving her 41 for the season. That is enough to qualify for the OHSAA unofficial state record book for most goals in a season. Unofficially, Spettle is the 65th player in Ohio history to score 41-plus goals in a season, while the 40-goal mark is tied for the 21st-highest reported total in a single-season. Also on that list multiple times is 2022 graduate Nyah Daniels, who scored 40 goals in 2019 and 45 in 2020. Daniels scored 144 times at Norwalk, good for the 10th-most career goals in Ohio history. Also in Monday's match, Abby Koenig and Xavi Immel scored the other two goals for the Truckers. Assists went to Amira Turner, Taryn Temple and Ella Andrews. At goalkeeper, Lilly Farmer made five saves. Norwalk has two more non-league matches at home to close out the regular season. The Truckers entertain Crestview (5-9) at 6 p.m. Thursday and Firelands (11-2-2) at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
