Mercy Health - Tiffin Hospital celebrates 110 years

TIFFIN — Mercy Health - Tiffin Hospital celebrated its 110th anniversary Thursday in McMullen Conference Room in partnership with the Mercy Health Foundation. Hospital history dates to 1913 when a four-story building was constructed on West Market Street on 7 acres of land. According to its historical marker, "community leaders and physicians promoted the necessity of a hospital that cared for all people regardless of race, creed, or color." "The roots of Mercy Health - Tiffin Hospital date back 110 years when the pastor of St. Mary's Church met with the newly-appointed bishop of the Toledo (Catholic) Diocese, the Right Rev. Joseph Schrembs, to discuss building a charity hospital for the community," said Andrew Morgan, president, Mercy Health - Tiffin and Willard. "Since that time, Tiffin hospital has grown and expanded, and we are excited to celebrate this milestone of more than a century of commitment to those we serve." When looking to create the hospital, Schrembs reached out to the Sisters of Mercy, who were known for their fine hospital work. He requested that three sisters from the convent in Grand Rapids, Michigan, be sent to administer the new hospital and convent. "Mother Bernardine McMullen, Sister Anthony McMullen, Sister DeChantel Lyons arrived in Tiffin on May 11, 1912," the historical marker notes. The original hospital, at 485 W. Market St., Tiffin, underwent multiple expansions to meet the needs of the community. In 2008, the hospital campus on St. Lawrence Drive was officially opened. The new, state-of-the-art facility cost $66.4 million, with the community providing "incredible support" of $5.3 million to the capital campaign, the release said. Today, the hospital has a strong network of primary care and specialty physicians as well as outpatient services to care for patients close to home. With more than 400 associates and a robust network of providers, Mercy Health – Tiffin Hospital offers several specialty services – a birthing center; emergency room; imaging center, including mammography, CT, nuclear medicine, PET Scan; cardiology services; inpatient and outpatient surgery; cancer care; and physical therapy, including pediatric therapy. The hospital began a $3.1 million expansion to its existing labor and delivery unit, allowing for three additional rooms to provide care for area mothers, newborns and their families. "As we celebrate this milestone, Mercy Health wants to thank our providers, nurses and entire hospital staff for the high-quality, compassionate care that they give every day to those in the Tiffin community and beyond," the release said. "In particular, Mercy Health is proud that for the fifth consecutive year, Mercy Health – Tiffin Hospital has earned a ranking among healthcare providers and insurers in Modern Healthcare's 2023 Best Places to Work award program." Additionally, the release said the hospital was one of 20 facilities identified on the Small Community Hospitals as a 100 Top Hospitals, according to an independent quality analysis provided by PINC AI and reported by Fortune. It is the second time Tiffin Hospital has appeared on the list. "We are honored to receive national recognition for the exceptional talent and clinical expertise of our team.
