Tiffin St Mary's Cub Scout Pack #445 The Cub Scout pack met on Feb. 06 in St. Mary Church school basement. They had three scouts earn their Arrow of light badges: Aaron Poignon, Kael Gilbert, and Cameron Tackett. They are now graduating on to Tiffin St. Joseph Troop #444 BSA program.Activity badges were also presented to cub scouts of dens:Webelos: Vincent Ennis, Easton Posey, Corbin Hadin, Nolan Wilhem, Blake Prenzlin, Corinne Zimmerman.Bears: Beckett Shope, Landon Timm, Zayden Urbanik, Chase Hall, Judd Wilhelm, Brayden Sterling, Rhys Scherger, Grayson Berlan.Wolves: Wayne Ennis, Kashton Halcomb, Michael Zacharias.Lions: Ezra Scherger, Spencer Timm, Jackson Hassinger.Fundraising patches were awarded to:Kael Gilbert, Aaron Poignon, Blake Prenzlin, Beckett Shope and Corinne Zimmerman. Sew Sharp 4-H Club Mollie Snyder led The Pledge of Allegiance and Cora Sooy led the 4-H pledge during the Feb. 18 meeting. Today's roll call was "What projects are you thinking about taking?" There were no secretary's minutes to be read, but the treasurer's report was approved as read. A citizenship report was given on Samuel Adams, a safety report on icy roads and sidewalks, a health report on the My Plate food groups, and an energy report on unplugging unused appliances. There was no old business. New business was offices and the changing of meeting times to a 4:30 p.m. start. Each member filled out a clover about themselves and we shared some of what we put down. Our next meeting will be 4:30 p.m. March 3 at The Old Fort Church. Attica Woman's Literary Guild The Attica Woman's Literary Guild met Feb. 13, 2024 at the Seneca East Public Library with 15 members present. President Paula Karr welcomed our members by distributing a delicious assortment of paczki pastries in celebration of "Fat Tuesday" which originated in Poland and is prior to the start of Lent. President Paula called the meeting to order and the members read the Collect together. She then read a poem entitled "Legend of the Valentine" by Helen Steiner Rice. The minutes of the January meeting were read and the treasurer's report was presented. Both were approved as read. There was no correspondence received. Pennies for the library were collected. Roll call was naming your favorite teacher which called back favorite memories for all. Election of officers was as follows: President, Paula Karr; Vice President, Linda Larimer, Secretary/Treasurer, Carol Martin; Historian, Cheryl Ulmer for the 2024-2025 year. Our program was led by Anne Fry and Kris Caudill in the Art of Beautiful Writing: Calligraphy. They spoke and shared informative videos on the history of calligraphy and the art of the written word. Calligraphy is the art of producing beautiful handwriting using a brush or special pen. The history of calligraphy dates back to ancient civilizations such as Egypt, China, and Greece where scribes used tools such as reed pens, brushes, and ink to write on papyrus, silk and parchment. With the advent of the printing press, calligraphy became less popular and beautiful ornate lettering was required only for special occasions. Both Anne and Kris are skilled calligraphers and guided us in practicing our own letters and words with pens and samples provided. We then had the opportunity to create a personal bookmark to keep for our efforts. Calligraphy takes patience, time, and positivity to hone your skills. It was an enjoyable and entertaining session for all. The meeting was then adjourned. Our next meeting will be at 2 p.m. March 12, at the Seneca East Pubic Library with Seneca East science teacher, Jon Darkow presenting "Insights into the Eclipse". Respectfully submitted, Carol Martin, Sec. American Legion Auxiliary Victory Unit 260 American Legion Auxiliary: A Community of Volunteers Serving Veterans, Military and their Families. American Legion Auxiliary Victory Unit 260 held their first meeting of 2024 on January 23 at the Legion Hall. President Laurie Risner conducted the meeting. The family of the late Maxine Heyman gave a generous donation in her memory. The donation will be used to purchase Christmas decorations. Unit 260's Junior members have been busy over the past months. Each member was given $50 to purchase toys, games and/or books for Tyler's Toy Box. Tyler's Toy Box is in memory of Tyler Senn. The toys go to the Ronald Mc Donald House associated with ProMedica Toledo Children's Hospital. The Junior members sent greeting cards to our veterans in November. They will be sending Easter cards in March. There are 6 Junior members. President Risner thanked those who helped with Wreaths Across America. It was a beautiful day and an honor to do so. Risner also thanked the committee who provided the Christmas party. It was an enjoyable evening. Risner shared the positive comments for the Attica area Garden club dinner. The 2024 membership goal is 80. Currently there are 67 members and 6 juniors for a total of 73 (91%) If you are a member but haven't paid your dues, please do so, soon. Buckeye Girls State Chairman, Martha Laughlin, reported that the Unit will send only one girl to Buckeye Girls State at this time. (Note to parents of girls who are in the eleventh grade: Encourage your daughter to apply for Buckeye Girls State. It is a great learning experience held on a college campus.) Upon suggestion from the Department of Ohio, Unit 260 will purchase Dove Sensitive Skin body wash for residents of Ohio Veterans Home. Tiffin Rotary President Amber Stover opened the Feb. 13 meeting at the Chandelier Event Center. Rev. Charlene Thomas delivered the opening prayer. Our lone guest today was Kalie Widman from Calvert. Attendance today was 28. The Basket Fund raised $43. Derek Sidor won the Weekly Drawing and Tom Debbink won the Free Lunch. Shane Parendo will celebrate a birthday this week. Amber reminded us that World Rotary Day is Feb. 23. Please wear something with a Rotary logo on it that day. She also congratulated the Rotary Rock Starz Trivia Team who were the big winners at Tiffin's Downtown Trivia. Our Rotary Moment today was Nancy Seifert. She works at United Insurance. She handles a variety of insurances including, home, auto, health and life. She and her husband have three sons and one granddaughter. Today's program featured Derek W. DeVine, Seneca County Prosecutor. Derek moved to Seneca County in 1994 serving first as Assistant Prosecutor handling adult felony crimes. He then worked at Supance & Howard Law Offices and then Lange & DeVine Law Offices before becoming Seneca County Prosecutor in 2009. Derek reported that when he first came to Seneca County drug dealers were selling cocaine and not using it themselves. By 2009, the drug problem centered on prescription drugs which were far more addictive. He was successfully involved in prosecuting one case where an MD was selling prescriptions. Because prescription drugs were so expensive and harder to get, people started using heroin, which was cheaper. Today, however, dealers lace their heroin with fentanyl, which makes it much more powerful and much more dangerous. Derek said that a dealer's motto is to "get his clients as high as possible without killing them". Sadly, many times the mixture is so powerful that the client ends up dyeing anyway. Dealers are not as professional or as accurate as pharmacists. He also noted that Seneca County now sees more methamphetamine or "meth". According to Derek, meth will ruin your teeth and your life but it usually doesn't kill you. He also said that "dealers" are being replaced by addicts who buy a little extra to sell so that they have some cash to get their next fix. 70% of the cases in his office are drug-related. We will be stopping at Olive Branch Home and Garden Greenhouse, lunch at Golden Corral, Pickwick Place and Crossroads Candle and Coopers Mill for dinner. Cost is $65. Our group is having shirts made with our garden club emblem that was made by our member Deb Kokai. We will be having a spa day Feb. 26 at 5 p.m. at Creek Bend Farms. We are decorating the Green Springs Library for spring on March 13 at noon. March 19 we will go to Judi's Flowers at 6 p.m. to make an arrangement. Tiffin Alumnae Chapter of Alpha Iota Sorority Six members were present for the Feb. 12 meeting at the Home of Linda Eakin. Holly Amlin was co-hostess. Linda called the meeting to order at 6:25 p.m. The minutes of the Nov. 13 meeting were reviewed. Beth Buko-Kiesel made a motion to approve the minutes and DeeAnn Ruffing-Kent seconded the motion. Motion carried. Treasurer Rita Koepfer gave the financial report. No bills were presented for payment. Report was filed subject to audit. Members donated card fronts, ink cartridges, eye glasses, baby blankets as well as food items. No correspondence was received. Unfinished business: The 2024 convention to take place Sept. 11-14 in Louisville, Kentucky was discussed. Our sorority will be responsible for the Wednesday Hospitality event. A menu and other information will be emailed to our members prior to the next meeting. New business: As several of our members will not be available to help with the fair gates this year, further discussion will take place as to whether or not we will be able to help with this fundraiser. Birthday greetings to Rita on March 4. To welcome our new member, Katie Griffin, to our sorority, each member recited the Pledge to A.I. Katie invited each member to attend her graduation from Tiffin University on May 4 and a reception on May 11. Holly presented a program on 25 things you need to know about the State of Ohio. Some of the interesting facts were that Ohio didn't officially become a state until 1953. It was declared a state in 1803, but didn't get the presidential stamp of approval until President Dwight Eisenhower signed off. He backdated the declaration to the original date. Ohio is home to the world's largest cuckoo clock which is located in Sugarcreek. The world's first electric traffic signal was introduced in Cleveland on Aug. 5, 1914. Harry M. Stevens from Ohio gave America its first hot dog in 1900. Akron was the first city to use police cars. John Lambert of Ohio made America's first automoble in 1891. The first full-time automobile service station opened in 1899 and Life Savers candy was invted in Clarence Crane in 1912. The door prize was won by DeeAnn. The next meeting will be on March 11 in the Kernan Room at Tiffin-Seneca Public Library with Barb Recker and Beth as co-hostesses. Kiwanis Club of Seneca County The Kiwanis Club of Seneca County hosted its Feb. 20 social meeting at the Tiffin Moose Lodge with 13 members and eight guests. The guests included an interclub with members from the Berlin Heights Kiwanis Club, along with Division 1-S Lt Governor Tina Seiling from the Norwalk Kiwanis. The speaker was Lynn Reino, FACT president for the past four years. Financial Assistance for Cancer Treatment has been in existence for 34 years, with a mission of providing financial service to any Seneca County resident who has received a cancer diagnosis. Last year they assisted 196 clients, which included 104 new clients and their total assistance reached $236,000. FACT has 15 working board members, meaning they are all very active in the day to day work of the organization, and she explained how personally rewarding it is to provide assistance to both the patient and also to the caregiver. Every month the board members work in rotation to take a turn manning the organization's cell phone. Eligible expense reimbursements include mileage to treatments, coverage for insurance deductables, overnight hotel expenses, with a per-client cap which is re-evaluated at the beginning of every year. Their funding includes the Polar Bear Jump which raises over $20,000 per year, United Way, a golf outing held in July which raises over $15,000, grants, on-line donations, memorials, the Baumann Auto car raffle, along with other local events. The meeting continued with members hearing an update on the recent membership forum hosted by the Fremont Kiwanis. The Berlin Heights club president shared an updated on their club's activities, as did Tina Seiling from the Norwalk Club. The door prize was won by Carlene Hitchcock and the 50/50 by a guest from Berlin Heights. The meeting ended with members sharing good news and providing a small donation toward the club's administrative account. Area Seniors Activity Professionals Area Seniors Activity Professionals hosted its February meeting at Good Shepherd Home in Fostoria. Cindy Swartz, secretary and volunteer coordinator at Good Shepherd, was the hostess for the meeting. Swartz shared information on Dementia and ten ideas to help challenge your mind and keep your body healthy. Mary Lee Creeger, retired activity coordinator, shared information on her SOLO Support Group (Supporting Our Loved Ones). The support group meets the third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Allen Eiry Center in Tifin. June Huss, treasurer of this group and president of Seneca County Home Auxiliary, reported on membership of ASAP. She asked the group for ideas to provide something special in April for the riders of the Seniors on the Go Bus. A donation was provided to the Seneca County Home Auxiliary. This donation was made possible by The Willows of Tiffin through one of their fundraisers. Due to the dedication of the Seneca County Home Auxiliary and their programming for the senior citizens in Seneca County, The Willows elected to donate some of the funds to this organization. The Seniors on the Go transportation is made possible by a grant provided to the Seneca County Home Auxiliary. Seniors on the Go Bus trips will resume in March. Susie Smith, transportation coordinator provides trips Monday through Thursdays for seniors in Seneca County. Diane Culver, executive director of the Allen Eiry Center reported on some upcoming events at the center which include two new activities, volleyball for seniors and a basic balance class. Sara Wax, transportation coordinator at the center reported there are several day trips coming up and four multi-day trips scheduled this year.
