Pair of Raiders earn district runner-up finishes

ROSSFORD — No local wrestler claimed a title Saturday, but four earned runner-up honors and three others picked up state berths at the Division III district tournament.Lakota had a pair of runners-up in Lane Thacker and Grant Bomer, while Seneca East's Nicholas Parks and Mohawk's Evan England also took second.Thacker suffered a 12-0 major decision loss to Norwalk St. Paul's Casper Caizzo in the 132-pound championship bout after beating Port Clinton's Gavin Cornell 7-2 in the semifinals.Bomer fell 11-4 in the 157-pound championship match to Milan Edison's Marcus Medina after doubling up Norwalk St. Paul's Rafael Gross 4-2 in the semifinals.Parks took second at 126 pounds after getting pinned by Medina's Abe Hermes (3:11). He advanced to the finals with a 5-0 sudden victory win in the semifinals against Delta's Richard Flores.England fell 7-4 in the 150-pound title bout with Elmwood's Tyson Thomas. England advanced to the finals by edging Seneca East's Will Bischoff 3-2 in the semifinals.Three other area wrestlers also earned state berths by finishing in the top four in their respective weight classes and another four placed. The state tournament begins this Friday in Columbus.Thirds went to Bischoff at 150 pounds and Lakota 165-pounder Braxton Quaintance, while Gabe Garlick added a fourth at 175 pounds for Lakota.Bischoff's semifinal loss to England dropped him into the consolation semifinals, where he edged Carey's Jordan Hertel 8-7 before doubling up Delta's Parker Cone 12-6.Quaintance began Saturday's portion of the tournament with a 6-3 loss in the semifinals to Milan Edison's Kohen Horvath, but he rebounded by pinning Woodmore's Landon Rich (2:01) in the consolation semifinals before flattening Port Clinton's Malakii Pinkleton (1:55) in the match for third for the Raiders.Garlick also started with a loss in the championship semifinals, falling 7-3 to Tinora's Aiden Helmke. He then scored 12-4 major decision against Patrick Henry's Trent Johnson before losing 5-0 to Ayersville's Kasen Wellman in the match for third.Seneca East's Dominic Hemmer ended as a state alternate by taking fifth at 285 pounds.He started Saturday in the second round of the consolation bracket, pinning Calvert's Cameron Bagent (2:29) and Mohawk's Coby Butler (2:00) before falling 4-1 to Ayersville's Ethan Courtaway. The loss knocked him into the match for fifth, where he upended Delta's Brady Smith 2-1.Sixths went to Lakota 138-pounder Cody Biddle and the Carey duo of Hertel and 157-pounder Mason Rickle.Biddle doubled Eastwood's Gavin Shropshire 6-3 and beat Oak Harbor's Brayden Myerholtz 5-1 before falling 2-0 to Gibsonburg's Antonio Salazar in the consolation semifinals. Elmwood's Peyton Schafer then pinned him (2:13) in the match for fifth.Both of Hertel's losses Saturday came in close bouts; along with the 8-7 loss to Bischoff in the consolation semifinals, he suffered a 5-3 sudden victory loss to Liberty Center's Jackson Bartels in the match for fifth. Fisher and Lancer Overmyer each claimed third Saturday to top a list of six area wrestlers earning state bids at the Division II district tournament.The top four in each weight class qualified for the state tournament, which begins this Friday in Columbus.Fisher took third at 150 pounds for the Fliers via a default against Braxden Martin of Perkins, while Overmyer pinned Ontario's Cole Dille (:44) for his third.Each of the Fliers moved on after battling back from a loss in the championship semifinals earlier in the day.Fisher fell 12-5 to St. Marys Memorial's Bo Hertenstein, but bounced back with a 13-3 major decision against Wauseon's Kahle Albright in the consolation semifinals.Overmyer suffered a 6-5 loss to Joel Welch of Columbus DeSales, then dropped Wauseon's Kale Waxler 7-2.Meanwhile, Clyde 106-pounder Heath Norris and 126-pound teammate Dawson Brimmer and the Bellevue duo of 132-pounder Ben Jacobs and 138-pounder Konner Dauch ended fourth to earn state berths, with each starting Saturday's competition in the second round of the consolation bracket.Norris scored a 10-0 major decision against Van Wert's Owen Bates, blanked Bellevue's Owen Sterritt 4-0 and shut out Licking Valley's Aiden Douglas 6-0 before getting pinned by Wauseon's Carter Stuckey (2:52).Brimmer pinned Galion's Carsten Branstetter (2:39), slipped past Van Wert's Xavier Leal 1-0 and beat Bellevue's Ben Wright 11-4 in the consolation semifinals. Napoleon's Roman Cordoba edged him 2-1.Jacobs beat Vermilion's Ashton Clifton 11-4, scored a 12-0 major decision against Lexington's Owen Reamsnider and upended Wapakoneta's Gavin Ridenour 9-7 before falling 3-2 to Wauseon's Antonio Torres.Dauch pinned Toledo Central Catholic's Lydell Osbourne (4:39), blanked Napoleon's Owen Beard 7-0 and doubled up Collin Calderon of Perkins 4-2 before losing 3-0 to Wauseon's Jordan Cook.Three other local grapplers also placed.Wright and Fostoria's James Simms each finished fifth to become state alternates.Wright began his day for Bellevue in the 126-pound semifinals, but suffered a 17-2 technical fall loss to Wyatt Nemitz of Perkins.That loss dropped him into the consolation semifinals, where he lost 11-4 to Brimmer, but Wright rebounded with a 7-0 win against Shelby's Arthur Cain in the match for fifth.Simms nearly found himself facing Fisher in the match for third at 150 pounds, He scored a 17-6 major decision against Hamilton Township's Jesse Ferrell and pinned Defiance's Michael Walz (1:49) before getting pinned by Martin in overtime (5:39) of the consolation semifinal match.Simms then pinned Albright (2:05) — a rematch of their opening round contest, which Albright won 9-6 — to capture fifth.Clyde 120-pounder Noah Curry took sixth after getting pinned by Licking Valley's Noah Curry (1:12).Pollock pinned Clear Fork's Walker Kirkpatrick (1:23) and Eddie Vitu of Columbus DeSales (1:52) before losing 7-1 to Wauseon's Zavian LaFountain in the consolation semifinals.
