Tiffin man arrested after firing shots

TIFFIN – A Tiffin man was arrested after firing multiple shots in the 300 block of E. Market St. Friday morning. "Witnesses reported hearing 4- or 5-gun shots," Tiffin Police Department Detective Lt. Mark Marquis told the A-T. "Witnesses on scene observed the suspect walking from that area eastbound on E. Perry St." The suspect was identified as Laphonso Witcher, 34, of Tiffin. He was located on E. Perry Street near Jefferson Street. where he cooperated with law enforcement and was taken into custody. "Witcher was detained pending investigation and transported to the Tiffin Police Department to be interviewed," Marquis said "Officers at the scene were able to locate a spent shell casing, indicating where the weapon had been fired. Upon being interviewed, Mr. Witcher admitted to having fired a handgun outside the residence and directed law enforcement to the location where he had disposed of the gun." The K-9 unit was deployed to the scene in "an attempt to backtrack the suspect's direction of travel" to try to locate the gun, according to law enforcement. However, the K-9 was not successful in locating the weapon. "After learning from Mr. Witcher where he had disposed of the weapon, law enforcement was able to locate both the handgun and the gun's magazine. There were no injuries involved in the shooting which appeared to stem from a domestic dispute." Witcher was initially charged with tampering with evidence. However, Marquis said the prosecutor's office will be consulted on any other charges, which include domestic violence and discharging a weapon within city limits. He is currently being held at Seneca County Jail.
