Carey boys set two records at Blue Devil Relays

CAREY — Mace Puckett ran on a pair of record-setting relays Saturday, guiding Carey to third at its own Blue Devil Relays.The freshman helped Carey claim the throwers 4x100 in 50.71 seconds and the shuttle hurdle in 1:04.02.The Blue Devils bettered the marks set by two sets of Van Buren runners — the Black Knights won the throwers relay in 51.28 seconds in 2011, and the shuttle hurdle in 1:06.0 in 2001.Eli Steen, Brayden Williams and Luke Steen rounded out the record-setting quartet for Carey in the thrower's relay, while Brody Baker, Bryce Puckett and Lucas Smith-Haywood filled out the shuttle hurdle team.Despite the records and two other victories, Carey finished in third place overall with 92 points, two points behind runner-up Hopewell-Loudon.Riverdale claimed the team crown with 140 1/2 points. Upper Sandusky turned back Calvert 68-60 for sixth.Calvert also set a meet record, with the triple jump squad of Jacob Rombach, Lukas Stultz and Billy Clouse teaming up to sail 114-11 1/4. That broke Van Buren's 2002 record of 113-5 1/4.The lone win for the runner-up Chieftains came from high jumpers Evan Kreais, Adam Kreais and Wade Kreais (16-6).Xander Roerdink added a second in the mile (5:00.81) and anchored the runner-up distance medley team (12:23.41). Tornadoes, Redmen both win a pairCASTALIA — Columbian and Fostoria each claimed a pair of events and Seneca East took another Saturday to top local girls efforts at the Margaretta Polar Bear Relays.The host Polar Bears won the team title with 97 points, while Fremont Ross edged Columbian 67-66 1/2 for second in the 10-team competition.Seneca East ended sixth with 38 1/2 points, and Fostoria nosed out Lakota 33-31 for eighth.Both of Columbian's victories came on the track, with Corinne Croy, Abbie Felske, Makiah Gurney and Grace Blonde capturing the 4x1,600 (22:35.06), and Carmen Lewis, Erica Raubenolt, Blonde and Croy winning the distance medley (13:52.23).The 4x1,600 time was a new school record by 0.44 seconds. Buckeye Central finished fifth with 69 points and Mohawk came in sixth (41).Martin sailed 14-10 to capture the long jump and Nevaeh Metzger claimed second (13-5 1/2) to give the Buckettes a 1-2 finish.Buckeye Central also ran second in the 4x100 (57.64). Meet officials did not provide individual names for the relay teams.Allison Wright chipped in thirds in the shot (28-7 3/4) and discus (87-1).
