Morgret chosen as NWDAB media service winner

The Northwest District Athletic Board announced its 2023-2024 media service award winners Tuesday and that included local sports writer Joshua Morgret. "I'm honored to be selected among the best of the best when it comes to media award winners here in this part of the state," Morgret said. "To even be considered is a priviledge and to be selected is a great achievement." Morgret currently writes for a variety of papers in the region including Tiffin Advertiser-Tribune, The Courier in Findlay, the Review Times in Fostoria, Sandusky Register, and Norwalk Reflector. He also helps out with other publications when available. "The Ohio High School Athletic Association's Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity Program was formed in 1994, and was charged with developing an awareness of the need for sportsmanship, ethics and integrity in the schools of Ohio. An important project of the committee is to present awards to schools, student-athletes, administrators, coaches and others who reflect this standard. Awards are also presented to media members in each of the six athletic districts across the state. The media awards are presented to thank you for your contributions to and coverage of high school athletics, and to also say thank you for "Respecting the Game" by upholding the standards of sportsmanship, ethics and integrity," the NWDAB website states. The other winner this year is Mark Kunz from BCSN in Toledo. "Mark is someone I strive to be," Morgret said. "To be selected with Mark, I am humbled. I do not take this lightly." When not covering sports, Morgret handles the obituaries for the five papers, as well as circulation at the Tiffin Advertiser-Tribune. Previous winners include Findlay Courier's Dave Hanneman, Jamie Baker, and Ted Radick, Tiffin Advertiser-Tribune's Pat Magers, and Fostoria Review Times' Scott Cottos. The award was first presented during the 1998-1999 school year with previous Sandusky Register sports editor Charles "Butch" Wagner being one of the first two recipients. Morgret will be honored during a presentation April 30 at Camden Falls. Morgret acknowledged a lot of what he does is in part to his bosses, athletic directors, teams, players, coaches, and fans. "When I look at the list of who has won this award over the past 25 years, it really is a who's who of sports media here in northwest Ohio," Morgret said. "The thing is, I look up to a lot of these media members. Some of them have passed away, but to be in the same sentence as Butch Wagner, Dave Hanneman, Vince Koza (Lima), Steve Junga (Toledo Blade), Bruce Hefflinger (Defiance), and Chuck Ridenour (Shelby Globe) - among many others - is of the utmost honor."
