TCS board approves resignation

TIFFIN --- At the Tiffin City School district's Board of Education meeting Monday evening, the board accepted the resignation of Superintendent Ben Richards. "I do want to thank Mr. Richards for the work on the building facilities portion," said Board Member Larry Kisabeth. "There's been a lot of people who have done a lot of work on it and it's close to being finished. I hope that we have something in front of us sooner as opposed to later. "I would hate to see us drop the ball on all the work that community members have done. I want to thank him (Richards) for leading that." The board then went into executive session to consider the employment of a public employee. Upon returning from the session President Dustin Williams said the board must be vague in what it shares with the public as it still needs to vote on the change of position for Richards. Until that vote is made, the board cannot name an interim superintendent. He did share that the board met with the administrative team during executive session to discuss ideas. The board scheduled a special meeting for 6 p.m. Thursday to vote on the title change. The board will then publicly share how it intends to move forward. In other news Assistant Superintendent Robert Boes presented the third quarter Crystal Apple Awards recipients Patricia Smith and Aaron Schmits. Smith was hired in 2008 as the central secretary and was later promoted to executive secretary. Schmits was hired in 2018 as an art teacher at Tiffin Columbian High School. Tiffin Middle School English teacher Sarah Cook then gave a presentation with five sixth-grade students. Cook and the students thanked the community and the Tiffin Middle School PTO for their donations of drinks and snacks for students during state testing. During the assistant superintendent's reports and recommendations, Boes said the district is applying for the Community Eligibility Program. "It is a program through the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce that would allow (upon approval of the application) every student in TCS to receive a free breakfast and lunch," he explained. The board then approved the following action items. 10.1 - Tiffin Columbian Graduating Class of 2024, pending completion of all requirements of Tiffin City Schools and the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce 10.2 - 2024-2025 school nurse agreement. 10.3 - Resolution approving a written post-issuance compliance policy in connection with the issuance of tax-exempt and tax-preferred obligations by the school district and the associated board policy, DIF Policy and Procedures Concerning Post-Issuance Compliance 10.4 - Mid-year update to NCOESC contract amount for FY24 10.5 - 2-year amplify K-8 ELA curriculum 10.6 - Superintendent resignation A special meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, April 25 at Tiffin Middle School, 103 Shepherd Drive, in the cafetorium. The next regular meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. May 27 at Tiffin Middle School, 103 Shepherd Drive, in the cafetorium.
