Newlove hurdles to district title

FINDLAY — Jack Newlove claimed the 300 hurdles and Xavier Matthewson took second in the high jump Saturday to spark Columbian's boys at the Division I district meet.Ashland tied Findlay for the team championship with 115 points. Columbian ended eighth with 36 1/2 points.Newlove won his race in 37.79 seconds, setting a stadium record.Matthewson cleared 6-1 for his runner-up finish in the high jump.The pair also helped the Tornadoes earn a regional berth in the 4x100, running with Leo Diamontopulous and Neven Neuman to end fourth (43.48).Ethan Reynolds added a fourth in the shot (51-4 1/4) for TC.The top four in each event qualified for this week's regional meet at Port Clinton.Matthewson also ran seventh in the 110 hurdles (15.63) and Alex Albert took eighth in the 3,200 (10:42.33). Blust, Abby Lewis, Morgan Roach and Zeis ran on the 4x100. Baker fuels Blue Devils at districtADA — Brody Baker claimed second in the hurdles races and helped two relays earn regional berths Saturday to spark Carey's boys on the final day of the Division III district meet.Baker had runner-up finishes in the 110 hurdles (15.33) and 300 hurdles (40.77) for the Blue Devils.He also helped the 4x400 team claim second (3:32.79), and led off the 4x200 team that ended third (1:33.09).Bryce Puckett and Austin Niederkohr joined him on both relay. Brayden Young rounded out the 4x400 squad, and Tripp Phoenix ran on the 4x200.Phoenix also crossed the line second in the 100 (11.17) and fourth in the 200 (23.41) to round out Carey's regional qualifiers.The top four in each event advance to this week's regional at Fostoria.Columbus Grove downed Bluffton 118-99 for the district crown, with Carey taking third with 65 points.Brayden Williams added a sixth in the discus (126-1) for Carey.The Blue Devils got sevenths from long jumper Lucas Smith-Hayward (19-4 1/4) and the 4x100 team of Eli Steen, Hunter Row, Smith-Hayward and Niederkohr (45.73). Bushong captures girls shot titleADA — Abbie Bushong won the shot and Chloe Etzinger ran third in the 3,200 Saturday to top Carey's efforts on the final day of the girls Division III district meet.Bushong heaved the shot 35-2 1/2 for her victory.Etzinger crossed the line in the 3,200 12:48.09 to take third and earn a trip to this week's regional meet at Fostoria.The top four in each event advance to the regional.Riverdale beat Columbus Grove 146 1/2-123 for the team championship. Carey tied Pandora-Gilboa for fifth (52).Kelsey Bursby ran fifth in the 100 hurdles (16.9) for Carey and Alli Kitzler did the same in the 400 (1:06.34).Both also helped the Blue Devils take fifth in the 4x200 (1:51.35) and 4x100 (52.8). Eliza Weinandy also ran on both relays. Upper Sandusky ended 11th (18 1/2).Rucker captured the 100 hurdles (14.91), ran second in the 300 hurdles (47.7) and anchored the 4x100 to third (50.3).Katelyn Turner, Brooke Brown and Amerie Wagner joined her on the relay team.Bellevue had several other regional qualifiers on the final day of the district meet. Fliers send a handful off to regionalOAK HARBOR — Clyde's girls won a relay and Bree Caudill and Marissa Gessner each earned regional trips in two individual races Saturday to help the Fliers tie for fifth at the Division II district meet.Perkins powered past Oak Harbor 111-85 for the team title. Port Clinton held off Millbury Lake 79-71 1/2 for third, with Clyde and Eastwood each scoring 62 points. Fostoria came in ninth (39).Caudill led off the winning 4x100 team (49.11) for Clyde, and added thirds in the 100 (12.47) and 200 (26.03).Gabby Griffin, Daisha Bulger and Cora Liskai joined her on the relay.Gessner chipped in a runner-up finish in the 1,600 (5:29.02) and claimed fourth in the 3,200 (12:18.02).The top four in each event qualified for this week's regional at Lexington.Pole vaulter Emma Leber added a third (10-0), and Liskai ran fourth in the 400 (1:00.07).Braylee Laughlin backed them with a fifth in the pole vault (9-6), and the 4x400 team of Jaydie Lantz, Laney Renfro, Addison Townsley and Anabelle Zieber came in seventh (4:31.46).Fostoria's Azhzenet Hatter captured the 300 hurdles (46.09) and ran second in the 100 hurdles (16.41).Karma Williams took fourth in the shot put (35-4 1/4) and Adori Bishop finished fifth (34-11).Sixths for the Redmen went to Maliyah Payne in the 400 (1:04.32) and the 4x100 team of Payne, Kannai McBeth-McMullen, Hatter and Addison Wright (51.26).Wright ended eighth in the 100 (12.99).
