Shooting death under investigation

WOOD COUNTY — The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting death of a Rudolph man by a Wood County sheriff's deputy that occurred early Sunday at the man's residence, authorities said Monday. George E. Taylor, 48, a resident of South Dixie Highway, died as a result of a single shot fired by a deputy's handgun after Taylor had pointed a rifle at the deputy, the sheriff's office said in a news release. The deputies involved have not been identified. "As far as the deputies who were involved, we do not release that information, as they amount to uncharged suspects in the ongoing investigation," Steve Irwin, press secretary for the attorney general's office said in a phone interview Monday afternoon. Irwin added, "Procedurally, once BCI's investigation is complete, it's forwarded to the county prosecutor for their review."Sunday's incident developed after the sheriff's office received a call reporting a suicidal individual at the address in Rudolph, which is located in Portage Township, six miles south of Bowling Green. Deputies attempted to de-escalate the situation after their arrival, during which time Taylor pointed a rifle at a deputy, the sheriff's office said. The deputy fired his gun in response, the sheriff's office said. "The deputies immediately performed first aid, including CPR, however, the subject passed away," a news release from the sheriff's office said. BCI is investigating at the request of the sheriff's office, a news release said. The sheriff's office is assisting, along with Wood County Coroner Douglas Hess and Wood County Prosecutor Paul Dobson. Responding with the sheriff's office to the incident were Weston EMS, the Central Joint Fire Department and the Cygnet Fire Department.
