Students welcomed

TIFFIN — Incoming first-year students were welcomed to Tiffin University at their annual Convocation Saturday, in the Heminger Center. The event began with a parade down Miami Street featuring new students, the TU Marching Band, cheerleaders and representatives from faculty and staff. The also university unveiled the new mascot, a bright green upgrade of Blaze, the Tififn Dragon. "Convocation is a momentous occasion that highlights the beginning of an exciting journey for our first-year students," said Peter J. Holbrook, provost and chief operating officer. Holbrook addressed the students with a speech addressing the importance of diversity. He said, "There's more than one culture at play here, and what we have here creates a campus culture." TU President Lillian Schumacher invited students to engage in an exercise during her address. "I want each of you to fill in the blank: During my first year at Tiffin University, I promise myself I will__." Friends and Family gathered to support their students and encourage the Class of 2028 to graduate. Convocation offers students a chance to familiarize themselves with the upcoming chapter of their lives and connect with faculty, staff and fellow students before classes start, she said. The TU Student Government President Michael Pavelich gave remarks about his personal story, from underperforming freshman to Student Senate President. He advised the new class to take advantage of mental health services on campus and to reach out when in need. His advice was followed by a performance of "Count On Me" by a student from the School of Creative and Media Arts. Classes for Tiffin University students start this week. With them comes the energy of athletics, the spirit of activities, and the excitement of new visitors to Tiffin businesses.
