OSS to host registration for hazardous waste collection

SENECA COUNTY — To help keep harmful materials out of local landfills, the Ottawa Sandusky Seneca Solid Waste District (OSS) will host annual special collection events for residents to dispose of unwanted materials properly. Registration for this year's event will begin Sunday, and the program will continue with collections until Oct. 9. Regarding what materials qualify for the program, they are grouped into four categories: Electronics, Tires, Appliances, and Household Hazardous Waste (HHW). The collections are open to all residents of Ottawa, Sandusky, and Seneca counties, including Bellevue and Fostoria. Collection locations will be available in all three counties. During the registration process, specific information, including dates, times, and locations, will be provided. Participating in these special collection events, residents help protect our environment and community by ensuring that hazardous materials are disposed of safely and responsibly. Businesses and institutions are not eligible to participate. How to register To ensure the right amount of supplies and workers for each event, residents must pre-register for the program online at RecycleOSS.org or by calling 419-334-7222, ext. 0 and following the prompts. No longer accepted The HHW collection program will no longer accept several materials this year, including motor oil, gas cylinders, lead-acid batteries, and non-regulated putties/adhesives. According to the release, several safe, alternative disposal locations were provided. Used motor oil can be taken to auto service stores like Wal-Mart, O'Reilly's, and Advance Auto Parts, as well as most local auto-service shops. Shops selling lead-acid batteries will also accept old batteries for proper disposal. Rechargeable batteries can be recycled at Lowes Department stores, while single-use alkaline batteries can be safely disposed of in your trash once they are dead. Gas canisters and cylinders, including propane, helium, Freon, isocyanates, CO2, O, MAPP gas, acetylene, and argon are no longer accepted at the HHW collection program but can be disposed of locally at Environmental Recycling Group (ERG), of Bowling Green, and Rader Environmental, of Findlay.
