Inmate collapses, dies during workout

Editor's note: This story was updated with the name of the inmate. SENECA COUNTY—A 56-year-old Tiffin man incarcerated at the Seneca County Jail died Sunday evening. Authorities reported that Bill L. Johnson, 56, of Tiffin was "working out by doing push-ups with other inmates and collapsed." Two inmates then began CPR on the man, working through "several cycles" until corrections officers and jail medical staff came in. The medical staff used an automated external defibrillator (AED) to shock the man twice. Tiffin EMS personnel then responded to the scene, taking over life-saving measures. EMS personnel administered "2 - 3 additional shocks" from their AED. The inmate was transported to Mercy Health - Tiffin Hospital by Tiffin Fire/Rescue Division. He was later pronounced deceased. "Preliminary information shows no evidence of foul play or suspicious circumstances, and the decedent will be transported by the Seneca County Coroner's Office to Lucas County Coroner's Office for an autopsy to determine the cause of death," said Seneca County Sheriff Fred Stevens in a press release. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends." The Seneca County Sheriff's Office did not provide the identity of the inmate by deadline.
