Fliers snag momentum and don't give it back in 33-14 win over TC

CLYDE- Clyde blew through the Columbian Tornadoes Friday night for a 33-14 Homecoming win. "I'm super proud of our kids," said head coach of the Fliers coach Ryan Carter. "You know Tiffin Columbian is a team that doesn't particularly like to come here and they have had our number for the last couple of years, so for us to get a win at a Homecoming game like that means a lot to us." The first half for the Tornadoes (2-5, 0-2 SBC Lake) seem to be where they did their best. The lone touchdown of that first half would be on a 10-yard pass from Zach Shawberry to Daelen Brandeberry as Liam Kerr kicked the extra point. "We made some plays early and we had a couple of momentum things and it was quite a bit frustrating but the game plan was just to pack the box and they challenged us on the perimeter and we just didn't make the plays early enough to get anything going," TC coach Judd Lutz said. TC would have scored more touchdowns, but right at the one minute mark at the end of the first quarter, Shawberry's pass was intercepted by none other then Kam Shortridge. Clyde would not allow for TC to score at all in the second quarter. As a matter of fact the lone score would be for Clyde (5-2, 1-1) for the second quarter and to end the first half would be on a 35 yard field goal by Tyler Soper. Soper would also go on to kick a 24 yard field goal in the fourth quarter. "Anytime that you can end those huge runs with field goals then that's huge in high school football," said Carter. One of the biggest plays in the game was midway through the second quarter as Clyde blocked a TC punt and Kaden Perkins ran it in for a score with a Soper extra point. "That was a huge momentum boost for us," said Carter. "They were doing a good job at stopping us in the first half. Perkins is a good rusher on punts. I knew from watching film all week that they kind of floated their snaps back there a little bit and so we felt like if we could get it loose then we're going to do it and it just so happened to work out for us. "You know the block part, it was huge and it's something that you don't want to do," said Lutz. "We got to fix it. Can't have a guy miss a block and we got to get it off quicker. I guess in that situation you know we're we are relying on guys to get things done that is needed to be done and we just aren't doing it consistently across the board." It was 10-7 Clyde at the half. Clyde would have possession of the ball to start the second half as Mason Flewelling would run for a 1-yard touchdown. On the Tornadoes' next possession, Xander Burroughs intercepted a pass that would give Clyde possession of the ball and ultimately would result in the touchdown. On their own third and three from the 34, Jonathan Lantz passed to Burroughs which would then result in a 34-yard touchdown. Clyde did not stop its momentum. With its first possession of the fourth quarter, Clyde got right back to business and wasted no more than three minutes as Adam Young ran for a two yard touchdown and Sopers extra point was good which would put a 23-point difference between Columbian and the Fliers. The Tornadoes though would not go out without a fight. On their possession after Clyde had scored their touchdown a pass from Shawberry to Johnny Bremyer for 11 yards that would be the momentum that Columbian needed to keep themselves in the game of sorts it would be the final touchdown of the game. "You know it's frustrating we just couldn't get that momentum back in the second half. We played bad enough in the first half but played good enough to stay in it for the second half," said Lutz.
