Hayes presents Civil War event

FREMONT—Reenactors portraying Civil War veterans driving Model-Ts are the latest addition to the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums annual Civil War Winter Camp Oct. 26, at Spiegel Grove. The winter camp gives an inside look at what life was like for President Rutherford B. Hayes' Civil War regiment while it camped for the winter. Watch reenactors fire their muskets during infantry demonstrations, hear military bands perform and see what the soldiers' camp looked like during the event at Spiegel Grove, the grounds of the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums and an accredited arboretum. Reenactors will make a camp based on the winter camps of President Hayes' regiment, the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and show tour participants what camp life was like. The 5th U.S. Colored Troops Company G will give a demonstration. Older re-enactors will portray Civil War veterans of the Grand Army of the Republic, a veterans organization of which President Hayes was a member. Firelands Timeless Ts will bring Model-T cars, which Civil War veterans would have driven at the turn of the 20th century to their regiments' reunions. They will also offer free rides in the Model Ts. Camp Chase Fifes & Drums and the 73rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regimental Band will also perform. Additionally, there will be a kids and family tour and activity that allows kids to participate in military drills and tour the camp with their families. Roots Poultry's food truck and Maumee Valley Heritage Corridor's root beer stand will offer fare. Food truck fare is not included with admission. Camp Tours last about 50 minutes and are outdoors. Please dress for the weather. Tickets are required for tours. Band performances and military demonstrations are free, and tickets are not required to attend those. Timed ticket required. 1 p.m. – Talk on President Rutherford B. Hayes' Civil War service by Josh Dubbert, Hayes Presidential historian in the tent by the greenhouse and rose garden. Campfire social with the reenactors to learn about Civil War reenacting. This is the sixth year for the Civil War Winter Camp, which is an event unique to Hayes Presidential and focuses on winter life of Hayes' regiment. Between battles, troops often spent time marching and preparing to fight. During the winter months, they would make a semi-permanent camp to await warmer weather and combat. Hayes' regiment spent its winters camping in what is today West Virginia. First Lady Lucy Hayes and the Hayes children often visited the camps, where Lucy would tend to soldiers, mend their uniforms and provide needed support. Hayes Presidential volunteers and staff have built huts like those used in winter camp at the back of the Spiegel Grove for this event. Tickets for non-members are $10 ages 13 and older, $7 for ages 6-12 and free for ages 5 and younger. Tickets for Hayes Presidential members are $8 for ages 13 and older, $5 for ages 6-12 and free for ages 5 and younger. A family pass that includes admission for two adults and up to four kids is $25 for non-members and $20 for Hayes Presidential members. Tours of the Hayes Home and museum are not included with the Civil War Winter Camp tickets and ticket packages. However, Hayes Presidential is offering a 20-percent discount on admission to the home and museum throughout the day on Saturday, Oct. 26. Hayes Presidential is America's first presidential library and the forerunner of the federal presidential library system.
