Report cards released Sept.

SENECA COUNTY – The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce grades districts' performance on several categories annually. The department uses students' state testing for much of the ranking and grade districts on a five-star system. One star is the lowest and five stars is the highest a district can receive. The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce released State Report Cards on Sept. 13. Defining the results The state department assigns overall rankings to school districts based on a weighted average of rankings in the following categories: • Achievement: Represents whether students' performance on state tests met established thresholds and how students performed overall on tests • Progress: The growth all students are making based on their past test performances. • Gap Closing: Shows how well schools are meeting the performance expectations for students in English language arts, math and graduation. It also measures how schools are doing in supporting English learners to increase language proficiency, reducing chronic absenteeism for all students and identifying gifted students and providing gifted services. • Graduation: A measure of the four-year adjusted cohort graduation rate and the five-year adjusted cohort graduation rate. • Early Literacy: A measure of reading improvement and proficiency for students in kindergarten through third grade. Our success reflects the commitment the entire community has to education at Seneca East," said Dr. Kagy. "We have made significant progress in meeting our district goals for the previous school year. The leadership team meets with State Support Team 7 each year to conduct a deep dive into our data and pinpoint areas of specific needs. Additionally, we evaluate locally obtained data to identify areas where we can better support our students, such as enhancing targeted interventions, adjusting curriculum objectives, adding course offerings, and expanding professional development opportunities for our staff," said Dr. Kagy, adding "but there is always room for improvement." " We outperformed some of the other area schools on the Progress component which measures the amount of learning a student accomplishes in one year, and our goal is to keep focused on this component. If kids can come to our school and achieve more than one year of learning by putting in one school year of work, we know we are doing something right," said Shoemaker. "We particularly saw this type of result in middle school where students in Grades 6,7, and 8 significantly exceeded state expectations in academic growth."
