Attica Community Red Cross Blood Drive results Thursday, Oct. 10, was another victory for patients in need of a blood transfusion for either the lack of an adequate supply or a cancer patient with bone marrow cancer issues. Again, through everyone's superior efforts, commitment, and hard work toward the American Red Cross's Blood Donation program, another successful response was created that met the goal of the American Red Cross's Northwest Ohio Blood Drive for the Attica Community Blood Drive Oct. 10. A total of 30 appointment slots which included five walk-in donors that produced a total of 28 donor blood credits. There were three donors deferred and/or insufficient quantities. A mixture of "Power Red" & walk-in donors really added to the totals credited for this blood drive. There were two "cancellations/no-shows." We really appreciated the efforts of the walk-in donors for this blood drive. The walk-ins & power red donors really made it possible for the blood drive goals for this blood drive to be met. We also know that 26 donor units (22 Whole Blood units and four "Power Reds" units) will help and save the lives of close to 100 people who are in dire need of blood transfusions or lifesaving cancer treatment blood properties. Again, our Attica Lions contributed toward the blood donor efforts with five Lions and a Lion partner in service presented themselves for the cause. A special thanks to the Attica Independent Fair Board for co-sponsoring this event with the use of the entertainment building at the fairgrounds. We also want to thank those Attica Lions Jeff Phillips, Steve Albright, Ariel Fry, Karla Coats, Dana Leber, Rev. Ron Spyker, Kris Caudill, Dean Montoney, Norm Wurm, and myself for setup, covering registration, servicing the canteen and the teardown cleanup. We would also especially like to thank the American Red Cross Northwest Ohio staff Melissa Beatty (Regional Coordinator), Bloomville Lion Tom Miller, staff team leader supervisor Estee' and her staff of medical technicians Diane, Dominique, and Ken of the Northwest Chapter of the American Red Cross for their excellent professional efforts, and especially all the blood donors to make this blood drive a success to meet goal. In addition, we would like to thank our public partners from the (Attica Hub, Advertiser-Tribune, our local Attica churches, our local Attica businesses, the Ballreich Snack Food Company, Keith & Judy Hopple, and AVR Fire Dept.) for their marketing efforts to help make this a successful community-driven blood drive. We continue to strive for more consistent improvements to produce even more blood donor interest. Going forward, the Attica Lions Club and the Attica Independent Fair Board would like to challenge every Attica resident, all Lions, fellow Attica Fair Board Members, relative, neighbor, and/or friend of the American Red Cross blood donor program to consider taking the time out to look at donating the "Gift of Life." Hopefully, in the future, we can continue to have these blood drives and grow this blood drive from within the Attica and surrounding area to benefit those people in need of vital blood demands. The next upcoming Attica Community Blood Drives for 2025 have been announced and will be Feb. 19, 2025, June 18, 2025, and October (Thursday To be Announced), 2025. Anne Lange DeVine, chair of the Social Committee said that the Oct. 6 Pedal Bike Tour of Tiffin's Taverns with John Reino was sold out and a great time was had by all. She noted that the November Downtown Trivia will be at the Chandelier. Contact her if you're interested in participating. Amber Stover thanked Rosalie Distel and Lee Martin for joining her in cleaning up Rotary Park last Saturday. She also reported that Keith is getting Rotary pop-up tents for the R4 Oct. 19 event but we still need some tables and chairs. Our speaker today was Cat Dennison from the Seneca County General Health District. Cat is their entomologist. She received her undergraduate degree in Public Health from Miami University of Ohio and her master's from the University of North Carolina—Chapel Hill. She began working for Seneca County in October 2023. Her program today featured arthropods—ticks and mosquitoes. She reported that Seneca County had 20 cases of West Nile Virus in 2023—mostly senior citizens and 22 cases of La Cross Encephalitis—mostly children and older seniors. These probably were the result of mosquito bites. Each summer, the County collects mosquito samples and sends them to Columbus for identification. This summer they collected 1300+ samples from 67 sites and 67 pools. 1,006 of those mosquitoes were infected with West Nile virus, however, no humans were reported getting it. Ticks cause Lyme Disease and Deer Fever. Lyme disease has increased 35% in recent years. In 2010 there were 37 reported cases and in 2023 there were 1,283. The best prevention for ticks is to wear light clothing, long sleeves and tuck your pants into your socks. Ticks ride on the top of grasses and jump onto human's clothing and then search for an area to bite. You should also consider using an insect spray with 20-30% Deet. Cat invited members to participate in providing feedback on the 2023 Community Health Assessment. To do so, go to www.senecacountyhealth.org and go to the menu, chooses "community health assessment" and take a photo of the QR code. Your input would be appreciated. Attica Woman's Literary Guild The Attica Woman's Literary Guild met on Oct. 8, 2024, at the Seneca East Public Library with 17 members present. President Paula Karr welcomed the members with cider and doughnuts. She called the meeting to order and the members read the Collect together. She then read timely poems entitled "The Season of Harvest" and "Pumpkin Prayer" that offered kindness and gratitude for this Fall season. Our program for the meeting was "Creating a Watercolor" and program member Nancy Reichert introduced Cynde Spyker, a talented artist in our community. Cynde began by displaying many samples of her artwork and discussing the different mediums of painting. Oils are vivid in color and long-lasting but can take weeks to dry. Acrylic paints have joined oils and watercolors as a popular painting medium. They are quick drying and can be applied like oil or thinned like watercolors. Cynde's focus for our program was watercolors. They are soft and transparent where pigments are mixed with water and applied to paper allowing the water to move the color on its own. Cynde demonstrated this by having each member create their own design of watercolors on wet and dry paper. We also tried techniques of dabbing, scumbling, and blotting to create texture and shading using different brushes and sponges. She included interesting facts that the history of painting can be traced to the days of the cavemen and the ancient Egyptians. We all had fun being amateur artists and appreciated Cynde's very informative and enjoyable presentation. The minutes of the September meeting were read and the treasurer's report was presented. Both were approved as read. Pennies for the library and dues were collected. Roll call was naming your favorite hobby (taken from the 1962-1963 booklet). Kris Caudill of the program committee gave a report on the history of the Literary Guild from 1917-1935 using the Guild booklets from that period. Kris reported that the Literary Guild's programs during this period of time were centered on current events, philosophical ideas, religion and the Bible, character studies, book reviews, music, and taking care of the home. Topics of discussion included: The Youth Problem in Ohio (1928); the ins & outs of Prohibition (1931); and the effects of the Great Depression (1934). Referencing our local historian, George Heabler, she relayed many interesting historical local facts. One of which is that the Attica Library had it's beginning in the late 1920s above the former Nick's/Louie's/NAPA store. We appreciated Kris's very informative and in-depth research. The meeting was adjourned. Our next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Nov. 12, at the Attica Community Church for our Fall Guest Night. Kelly Shock will present "The History of Vintage Barbie". Everyone wear pink! Respectfully submitted, Carol Martin, Secretary Green Stem Gardeners Fifty people enjoyed our Sept. 17 open house meeting. Our speaker was Judi from Judi's Flowers in Fremont. She gave a presentation on a fresh flower arrangement. She also had many items for sale. We had a raffle and door prizes. Our October meeting was at Misty Mushroom. Julie Ibarra shared her knowledge of native plants and what they can be used for. Next, we went to Humble Gardens. Bob Wilson the founder gave us a tour of his community gardens. They exist totally on donations of money, time, food scraps for the chickens and ducks or metal which is recycled and the money is used for the gardens. We had a great time. Green Stem Gardeners meet at 6 p.m. the third Tuesday of the month. If you would like to join us call Pat Saam at 419-307-7776. American Legion Auxiliary Unit 169 Tiffin, Ohio Ella Kerschner gave a wonderful presentation about her time at Buckeye Girl's State. She said she made a lot of new friends, was given guidance, held a number of different positions and overall had a great time. She expressed her thanks for being given this opportunity. President, Mary Ann Boehler opened the October meeting and prayer was given by Chaplain, Denise Mullennex. Boehler then led in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and the Preamble. Secretary, Lisa O'Millian read the September minutes and they stood approved as read. Treasurer, Karen Kotnik read the Treasurer's report and it stood approved as read. One check was written to Boehler for socks. Boehler received a packet of reports and distributed them accordingly. A signup sheet will be hung the month of November in the Post to sign kids up for the Kid's Christmas Party from 1-3 p.m. Dec. 14. A lunch of hot dogs, chips and a drink will be given to the kids. Adults will be able to purchase lunch for a small fee. The Veteran dinner and Feather party will take place on Nov. 9. Vice President, Barb Trapp made a motion to charge $8 for non-veterans to eat. Sandy Schleter seconded it and the motion carried. Veterans will eat for free. Trapp submitted a bill for candy to Kotnik. Schleter made a motion to approve payment and Mullennex seconded it. Motion carried. Trapp gave Mrs. Dietrich's 4th grade class cards to color for the veteran bags. Trapp also spoke with the Veteran's Home. They are in need of wall phone chargers & tissues. Sgt. Of Arms, Chris Brown reported the American Legion Auxiliary from Bloomville would like to attend our next meeting for informational purposes. Trapp is checking with First Lutheran Church to see about us making cookies for their blood drive on October 28. Kiwanis Club of Tiffin Melissa Fox, owner of Resolute Wellness Associates, was the featured speaker for the Oct. 17 meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Tiffin. Eighteen were in attendance at Kiwanis Manor in addition to one member joining via Zoom. Madalyn Gurney, a student at Sentinel, was the guest of Mary Lewis. Columbian High School honor students Layne Woodruff and Meghan Hausman, were the guests of Michelle Tuite. Melissa has a wide range of credentials including a Registered Nurse, master's of Science in Nursing, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practioner and Family Nurse Practitioner. She has been a mental health practitioner since 2021. She said that the COVID pandemic was a lot for people to handle but the silver lining is that it reduced barriers to mental health care. Patient services for Resolute Wellness Associates are 100 percent remote as she serves her patients through telehealth. According to statistics, 43% of the population rated their stress levels as moderate or above. Thirty percent of the population in Seneca County who need mental health care have been unable to find it. Melissa said that in the United States, the ratio of patient to provider is 320-1 while in Ohio that ratio is 350-1 and in Seneca County, it rises to 650-1. Accessibility to scheduling with Resolute Wellness Associates is 24 hours a day through its website. Services offered include mental health care, medication management, telehealth visits, genesight testing, and a holistic approach to mental health. Most recently Melissa has received advanced training in perinatal mental health. She said she is excited to get out into the community through opportunities such as speaking engagements. John Millar provided the prayer. Melissa said that the Tiffin Kiwanis Foundation Christmas Candy Sale will begin soon and that orders will be available by Dec. 12. Kayleigh Feasel will continue to work on a Kiwanis apparel sale. Melissa thanked members who have taken a month to find speakers for the Thursday noon meetings. Sign-up sheets were passed for members to sign up to help with the Kiwanis Christmas Parade and the Kiwanis Cooking Show. The board meeting has been rescheduled for next Wednesday at noon. Bernie and Shelly Steinmetz celebrated their wedding anniversary. Mikki King and Roger Murray celebrated their club anniversaries. The speaker for the Oct. 24 meeting will be Jen Gill. She will speak about juvenile arthritis.
