Warnement runs wild in Calvert playoff win

Calvert – and mainly Cal Warnement – ran all over Hardin Northern Friday night in a 55-25 Division VII playoff win at Frost-Kalnow Stadium."It was a playoff win," Calvert coach Mike Lento said. "We are blessed that we get to play another week." The Senecas main person in charge of touchdowns for the night was senior Cal Warnament. He scored four of them as he rushed for 332 yards on 21 carries. "Cal's a great runner, and tough as nails. He's a great player but it wouldn't be possible without the guys up front," said Lento. "Our guys did a great job, with blocking, and opening the outside. (Tucker) Coleman did a great job throwing and the receivers did great a job as well." His first TD of the night would come on the second possession in the first quarter for Calvert. All it took was converting first down when he got it and ran for 47 yards, as that is where the ball was placed at for the Senecas to take possession. Hardin Northern got it back but couldn't hold onto it and turned it over to the Senecas. Nine plays later, Warnement jumped over a pile of players in the middle to get a 1-yard touchdown, with Coleman's run in for a two-point conversion from the three yard line deemed good, bringing Calvert to 14-0 over the Polar Bears. Calvert was not about to let the Polar Bears score anything. "Our defense has been great all season and that is credit to coach Dirckson." said Lento. Hardin Northern still could not catch a break as a pass was intercepted by John Schumacher. He then ran up the left side of the field for a 25-yard touchdown. Cameron Lucius's point after was good, bringing the score to 21-0. The Polar Bears weren't going to allow a shut out that early, though. Hardin Northern, on their first possession of the second quarter, would take a fourth down-and-4 situation and make it into a first down when Alexander Wilson carried the ball to the 38 yard line from the 42 on Calvert's side. A pass from Wilson to Mason Stewart got the Polar Bears points on the board, and the point after from Nolan Hopson was good. The Senecas saw the opportunity for a passing game, and decided to roll with it. Coleman threw the ball for 17 yards and almost didn't connect to his intended receiver of Logan DeMoss, but thanks to a tip from Dylan Bacon, the ball landed into DeMoss' hands for a touchdown, with the point after good from Lucius. The Polars Bears would take the ball back on a fumble and use that as a chance to put some points on the board when Wilson passed it for 29 yards to Hopson. DeMoss however blocked the point after attempt, leaving the Polar Bears with just six points added. Calvert got one more touchdown before the end of the first half as Carter Wolph caught a pass from Coleman in the end zone. The point after attempt was blocked. The score was 34-13 at the half. "We gave up an easy one right before the half. Then they got the score before half. Then we scored to bring it down to two, then we let them score pretty quick and that pushed it out to three." said HN coach Jerry Cooper. "That's a credit to them." Each team only made one touchdown each in the third quarter. Hardin Northern would receive the ball to start the second half of play, and on a second-and-8 at the 42 yard line, Hopson carried the ball down to the 27-yard line. That set up a first-and-10, to which Wilson carried for eight yards, before he ultimately ran for a 19-yard touchdown play up the far side, but his two-point conversion attempt failed. After a turnover and the Polar Bears not being able to capitalize on the ball, the Senecas got the ball back with 1:55 on the clock. It took Warnement two plays to get a 67-yard touchdown run, completely untouched. The point after from Lucius was good. The score at that point was 41-19. "First thing, I give Calvert credit," said Cooper. "Coach Lento has coached them guys real good, and they played better then we did, they executed way better then we did. We want to wish them the best of luck. The things they were better at, especially being faster, is positive for them." Hardin Northern's last touchdown would come at the start of the fourth quarter. A 20-yard pass from Wilson to Mason Stewart allowed for the Polar Bears to get within 10 yards of the end zone. Bacon then received a pass from Wilson, after it was tipped into his hands from DeMoss. The two-point conversion; however, was not successful. After Calvert received the ball, they converted a first-and-10 situation into a touchdown. The ball was spotted on the 47 yard line, and Warnement took it and ran for 56 yards, untouched and used space that was open. Lucius' point after was good. The Polar Bears turned the ball over the next time they had the ball, and the Senecas made quick work of it. On third down and on the 21-yard line, Lucius ran it into the end zone from the left side. His point after attempt had to be repeated after a penalty was assessed against Calvert, their fifth one of the night. He did manage to finish his drive he started and kicked the point after through the goalposts."I have been the head coach of Hardin Northern for two years," said Cooper "and over the two years, we have had to play both sides of the ball with only 25 kids. Luckily, we have been able to play with none of them getting hurt. They competed very hard. No one realizes how worn down you get when you have to play every down, every game, and special teams. We didn't play well enough to hang with those guys today. Calvert is first class, and we wish them the best." The Senecas move on and will host Delphos St. John's.
