High school football: Week 12

Delphos St. John's at CalvertRecords: Delphos St. John's: 4-7; Calvert: 7-4Outlook: It's looking like a lot of Deja vu, but just a different opponent for Calvert.This week, it takes on the Blue Jays of Delphos St. John's in Division VII, Region 26 quarterfinal playoff game action Saturday at 5 p.m.For the seventh-seeded Senecas though, they face a team eerily similar to what they battled against in Week 2 of regular season, which was Monroeville."Offensively, they remind us of what Monroeville was doing in Week 2," Calvert coach Mike Lento said. "They have a very tough quarterback and running back as well as being stout up front. Defensively, they play physical and move to the ball very well. In all honesty, it is like looking at each other in the mirror. It's going to be great for fans to catch on a Saturday night during playoffs."Calvert's Cal Warnement will be a concern for 15th-seeded DSJ, as he rushed 21 times for 332 yards and four touchdowns last week against Hardin Northern. Tucker Coleman had a stellar performance last week as well, completing 11-of-15 passes for 102 yards and two TDs. He also scored on a two-point conversion. Rounding out the offense for the Senecas includes Carter Wolph, who had four catches for 44 yards and a score, Logan DeMoss who had four receptions for 41 yards and a touchdown, and Cam Lucius, who not only rushed three times for 29 yards and scored a touchdown, he hit five-of-seven extra points.Defensively, DeMoss had 11 tackles, Wolph nabbed six tackles and two sacks, Carter Cook had eight tackles and John Schumacher had four tackles and an interception."At this point, we need to take care of our 1/11 that we have done all season long," Lento said. "We need to do the job at each of our positions and not get out of that. When we do that, we seem successful. They have a great staff and will come in with wrinkles to what they do, I'm sure of it. It's playoff football and no one wants to go home."The Senecas have not been this far in the playoffs since 2017. They have not played DSJ in recent history and they aren't letting their victory from last week against Hardin Northern distract their focus away from their goal."We want to keep the momentum rolling," Lento said. "We loved what we saw from our guys and the coaches were focused and called a great game on both sides of the ball. We need to make sure we build off that in practice with great intensity and instruction. We have great practices right now and they are eager to get better. We are taking full advantage of these extra weeks. The team is learning because we believe our job is not done."Even with the extra day, Calvert is taking advantage of any extra time they can get."Anytime you have extra days, it is beneficial, but also knowing it makes for a shortweek the following week," Lento said. "But we will cross that road when the time comes.Right now, we are focused on game planning and practicing for a very good Delphos St.John's football program."
