Local business initiative boosts economy

SENECA COUNTY — In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, many small businesses faced unprecedented uncertainty. These businesses, especially in Seneca County, rely heavily on the holiday sales season to sustain them through the year. Historically, sales tend to slow down in January and gradually pick up in February and March, but the colder months often bring challenges. Small businesses must meet their sales targets and keep their presence known in the community to garner local support. During this period, many small businesses reached out to the Seneca Regional Chamber for help in spreading the word about their services. The Love Local campaign emerged as a response to this need. "We have to support, celebrate and be excited for the small business owners that take the risk," said Executive Director Bryce Riggs. "It's important to champion small business owners who contribute so much to our community." The concept of Love Local extends beyond just shopping at local stores. It encompasses dining at local restaurants, employing local services and hiring local people. This approach to supporting local businesses helps ensure that money spent within the community stays in the community. "Love Local is helping people recognize that when you go in and you purchase something from a retail shop, yes, that's huge," said Director of Marketing Marisa Huss. "But also look at where you are getting your produce from. Who are you having to remodel your bathroom, who are you going to see as a doctor? There are so many ways to incorporate loving local into your life outside of the holiday season and outside of the 'shopping small' aspect." Huss further explained that $67 of every $100 spent locally remains in the local economy as opposed to $43 when $100 is spent at a non-local business. "You're supporting your neighbor," she continued. "It's not the person that is across the country, but it's a person that lives next door to you, whether that's your insurance agent the person who owns a retail shop, or a person running a restaurant." The Love Local campaign also focuses on educating the community about the benefits of shopping locally. The pair explained that while online shopping has made spending locally more challenging, some local retailers are pivoting to creating online shops. Even larger chain stores that employ local people contribute to the local economy through sales tax and other means. However, the convenience of online shopping has made it challenging to keep spending locally. Many local businesses have adapted by offering online shopping options, making it easier for residents to support them without leaving their homes. The campaign runs from November to the end of the year. The initiative includes a comprehensive Love Local Toolkit designed to assist businesses in promoting their products and services. This toolkit is packed with valuable resources such as graphics, sample posts and customizable images for background covers. Additionally, businesses can access printable flyers to enhance their marketing efforts. The campaign includes a focus on chamber cash, which is available all year round. The chamber estimates chamber cash has generated over $400,00 in the past four years. More than 175 retailers and organizations accept chamber cash. Chamber cash in denominations of $5, 10 and $50, which can be ordered online or through the chamber's office by calling 419-447-4141 or visiting the office at 96 S. Washington St., Suite B, Tiffin. A key aspect of the campaign is its partnership with Old Fort Bank Company, which has been instrumental in its success. The bank's sponsorship has enabled the initiative to thrive, according to the chamber. Huss concluded by encouraging residents to make at least one change by choosing one item they typically buy online and purchasing it locally instead. "Just start buying it locally and you'll see that that business that you're supporting is going to be around much longer than if you didn't just make that one little change," Huss said. This simple act can significantly contribute to local businesses, ensuring they remain a vital part of the community for years to come.
