Haynes, Warriors remain perfect

ATTICA — Hunter Haynes made six three-pointers, scoring 20 points overall to lead the way for Mohawk as it beat Seneca East in N10 play Saturday night, 64-45.Seneca East's Luke Mason made a baseline layup to go up, 2-0. The Warriors dominated the rest of the first quarter. "Obviously, we started off really well there," Mohawk coach Paul Dunn said. "We put a lot of stops together." Coach Dunn talked about reviewing at the quarter break with his team what had got them to that point."We kind of went away from it," Dunn continued. "But third quarter, fourth quarter, I thought we got back to our form,"Foul troubles for the Tigers didn't help either. A minute and a half into the game, Seneca East's starting guard Taylor Young was in foul trouble with back-to-back calls in four seconds of gameplay. His substitute, Ayden Zack quickly found himself with a couple fouls a little over a minute from then.Mohawk's Kahne Hayman then hit a jumper in the lane. After a free throw by Boomer Cleveland, Hayman stole the ball then dribble penetrated for a layup. The next time down the floor, Hayman stole the ball again and was fouled, making one foul shot.Lucas Bordner made one-of-two shots from the charity stripe for Seneca East (7-4 overall, 3-3 N10) to make it 6-3 in favor of the Warriors halfway through the quarter.Mohawk (7-0, 5-0) went on a 13-0 run to end the first period. The run started with scores on three straight possessions: Haynes hitting a three at the top of the key; Hayman then swiped another steal and scored at the other end; and a layup off the dribble by Cleveland.A little over a minute later, Hayman made a three-pointer. The quarter ended as Hayman passed while he was falling down to Cleveland on the right wing. Cleveland threw up the shot before the buzzer and it swished through the net to cap the run and the quarter.The Tigers put up more of a fight in the second after senior Justin Reiter scored inside on an inbound pass, but the Warriors' Haynes answered on the ensuing possession with a baseline layup. The Orange & Black's Young then scored on a contested bucket in the paint to get his team within 14 points of Mohawk.The teams traded three-pointers on four straight possessions with Seneca East's Reiter hitting one from the top of the key followed by the Warrior's Haynes from the right wing. Luke Mason answered for the Tigers from the top of the key, and Haynes dropped another from the right corner.Seneca East's Bordner scored on a contested layup to make it 27-15 halfway through the second quarter.Threes on back-to-back possession by Mason and Bordner got the Tigers to within a half dozen of the Mohawk.Mohawk's Cleveland dribble penetrated for a right-hand layup to round out the scoring in the half – 29-21 for the Warriors.Hayman made one from the charity stripe on Mohawk's opening possession of the second half.Seneca East's Bryler Beamer then blocked a shot and tossed a long pass to Young, who converted a layup at the other end.A little over a minute later, Haynes hit his fifth trey of the competition. The Warriors' Cleveland then hit two foul shots before Bordner hit a turn around jumper for Seneca East. Cleveland made a bank shot in the lane only. On the ensuing possession, Mohawk's Hayman grabbed a rebound and raced down the floor and threw a nice alley oop pass to Cleveland who laid it up for two. The Warriors were ahead, 39-25, halfway through the third.Haynes made his sixth and final three-pointer of the game from the left wing before Kaleb Bish made a steal and went coast-to-coast for the layup for Mohawk.The Tiger's Beamer converted an and-one opportunity to end a 14-2 run by the Warriors.Mohawk's Connor Flood made four straight free throws on back-to-back attempts at the stripe. The Tigers' Bordner sank a buzzer-beating three from the left wing to end the quarter, but Mohawk led 48-31.The teams swapped baskets as Seneca East's Reiter scored inside then Flood put back an offensive board for the Warriors. Bordner's layup was responded with a layup by Hayman. After a converted free throw by Bordner, Mohawk's Hayman found Flood inside for two. Bordner then dribbled in the lane for a layup before the Warriors again responded when Bish made a bank shot from close range to end the exchange.Next, Mohawk's Hayman made a layup assisted by Bish.It was a couple minutes before the Tigers' Brady Bloom put back a rebound. Haynes answered right back with a bank layup.Over a minute later, the Warriors' Flood put back a rebound of his own.Bordner was able to draw contact and sank a couple free throws for the Orange & Black thanks to it.Cleveland's layup and Landyn Hicks' three from the left corner were the final points for Mohawk and Seneca East respectively."I thought we competed well. Obviously, they're explosive. They've got a lot of guys who can make plays," Seneca East coach Anthony Langhurst said. "I'm happy with the effort. Just a few things we can do offensively and defensively to tighten things up."Aside from Haynes' 20 points, Cleveland scored 18, Hayman and Flood ended with 10 points each for the Warriors.Bordner scored 21 points to lead the Tigers.
