Conley sworn in as chief

CAREY — Carey Mayor Chad Kin swore in Jeff Conley as the next Carey Chief of Police during an emergency village council meeting Wednesday afternoon. After the resignation of previous Chief Ryan Doe, who stepped down in November 2024, saying he was simply offered a better position, the village council voted down prospective interim candidate Shawn Beckley after Carey residents brought concerns about Beckley who had previously worked for the village until June 2024. There were later concerns that if the village could not find a Chief in the near future, the Carey police would be turned over to the jurisdiction of the Wyandot County Sheriff's Office. Conley taking on the role changes things. No longer do Carey residents have to worry about losing their police department. Originally from Carey, Conley graduated from Carey High School before majoring in law enforcement at Terra State Community College. He worked for the Wyandot County Sheriff in 1995 until 1997 when he joined the Ohio State Highway Patrol. He retired from the OSHP in 2019 but continued to serve in the public safety sector and other community organizations. Conley said he is "excited to serve" the Carey community in his new role. Chief Conley will begin the position on Jan. 13.
