Eagles edge Mohawk in OT, 53-50

NORTH ROBINSON — Colonel Crawford went on a 12-2 run in the final four minutes of the fourth quarter to tie the game at the end of regulation with Mohawk. From there, the Eagles were able to keep that momentum rolling in overtime to defeat the Warriors in Northern 10 Conference play Friday night, 53-50.The win is Colonel Crawford's 10th in a row and makes the Eagles (10-1 overall, 7-0 N10) the sole team in first place in the N10 as Mohawk (7-1, 5-1) earned its first loss of the season and in league competition."We just didn't panic," Colonel Crawford coach David Sheldon said. "We had to turn up the full-court press. We got a couple big steals. Guys hitting big shots."The run started after the Warriors' Connor Flood put back an offensive rebound to put his team up, 40-30, midway through the fourth quarter.On the ensuing possession, Mohawk's Kahne Hayman fouled out with 3:52 remaining in the game. The Eagles' Payne DeGray made both of his free throws to move within eight points of the Warriors.After a defensive rebound by Colonel Crawford's John DeGray, Lucas Foy knocked down a three-pointer from the right wing.On the Eagles' next possession though, Mohawk's Kaleb Bish stole the ball and Flood was able to score inside down at the other end for their team's only points during the stretch.Brayden Holt responded right back for Colonel Crawford with a three from the top of the key, his third of the contest, to make the score 42-38 in favor of the Warriors.Holt then made a steal and found John DeGray inside for an easy bucket with just a couple minutes left in regulation. Holt stole the ball on Mohawk's next two possessions as well. The first didn't result in points, but on the second of the two steals, Holt found Payne DeGray in the paint for another inside bucket to tie the game with roughly 30 seconds left.Mohawk called a timeout with 16.5 seconds to draw up a final play, but the buzzer beater behind the arc was missed; and the game then went into overtime tied at 42-42.Colonel Crawford scored on seven of their eight possessions in the final period, starting with Holt's ball fake that threw off defenders, leaving him open to hit a jumper from the free throw line.A Payne DeGray steal resulted in points when Holt was fouled and made both of his foul shots to put the Eagles up, 46-42.The Warriors' Ben Bogner dribble penetrated into the lane for points in the paint before Colonel Crawford's Holt made a couple more shots from the charity stripe after being fouled.After a Parker Weithman defensive board, Lucas Foy hit one-of-two free throws for the Eagles to push their lead to five points with 47.7 seconds to go in overtime.Weithman was fouled after grabbing another defensive rebound, and made a foul shot with 33.2 seconds remaining.Payne DeGray grabbed a Mohawk miss and was fouled, making one-of-two from the foul line.The Warriors' Hunter Haynes made a three from the top of the arc. Mohawk called a timeout with 14.6 seconds left and down by four points.A quick foul by Mohawk sent Holt to the line where he made both free throws to get it back to a six-point game.Boomer Cleveland hit a three from the right wing and the Warriors called another timeout with 2.1 seconds of gameplay left.A five-second violation by Colonel Crawford gave Mohawk the ball under their own basket the same amount of time left. The ball was inbounded to Kaleb Bish at the right wing, but his shot was blocked by Payne DeGray to end the game."They're a well-coached team," Mohawk coach Paul Dunn said. "We haven't been in that situation yet this year. We've got a bunch of seniors, but we just wrote a master class on how to not finish out a game."You can't do that against good teams in their place," Dunn continued.The game was tight all the way as Hayman and Cleveland had five points each in the first quarter to lead Mohawk to a one-point lead over the Eagles to that point, 12-11. Payne DeGray had five and John DeGray scored four in the first to lead Colonel Crawford early.The second quarter was slowed down a bit, but Mohawk again won the period by a point to go into halftime with a 21-19 advantage. Cleveland led all scorers at the half with nine points.Cleveland knocked down a couple threes in the third, ending the quarter with nine points to have 18 over the first three quarters. Flood chipped-in five as well in the third for Mohawk. Holt had seven of the Eagle's 11 points in the frame while his team trailed going into the fourth, 34-30.Holt led the Eagles and all scorers with 23 points, 18 of those after the first half. Payne DeGray added 14 as well for Colonel Crawford.Cleveland led the Warriors with 21 points.
