Tigers top Carey, remain 1 game back in N10 race

ATTICA — Although a close game, Seneca East was able to keep ahead of Carey most of the night as it came away with a 47-41 home victory in Northern 10 Conference play.The Blue Devils rushed out to a 5-0 lead thanks to a offensive rebound and put back by Emily Brodman, a free throw by freshman Bella Phoenix, and a bucket in the lane by Riley Yost.On the following possession, Seneca East's Izzy Stockmaster made a basket while being fouled. Stockmaster missed the free throw, but a rebound and put back by teammate Alexa Snay got the Tigers within a point.A lay up by Seneca East sophomore Karli Foos and a free throw made by Snay put their team up before Carey freshman McKinnley Kessler banked it off the glass to tie the game at 7-7 with a couple minutes left in the first quarter.The Tigers' Madi Smith drained a three from the top of the key, and Carey's Trinity Reinhart made a bank shot of her own inside the paint to round out the scoring in the first. Seneca East (10-4 overall, 6-2 Northern 10 Conference) led at that point, 10-9.Snay opened up the scoring in the second quarter for the Tigers with a jumper from the foul line. A spin move in the lane by Foos gave her an open look to make it a five-point game.That's when Carey (9-4, 3-1) went on a 10-0 run, scoring on their next four possessions.The run started when Brodman found Yost open for a three from the right wing. Yost then got an assist of her own, throwing to Kessler in the left corner for another three-pointer to take a one-point lead. Kessler knocked down a couple free throws on the Blue Devils next possession, and Reinhart put back an offensive board before Seneca East's Foos hit a floater in the lane to end the run.That floater started a 10-3 run for the Tigers to end the half on a high note.With a little over a minute left in the first half, Foos passed to classmate Jordyn Enders—who nailed a triple from the right corner to tie the game at 19-all.At the other end, Carey's Reinhart converted an and-one opportunity to give the Devils the lad again. Seneca East's Foos banked a shot after another spin move in the lane, and a three-point shot by Stockmaster finished out the half with the Tigers up, 24-22.Smith hit a three from the right corner for the Orange & Black, but Carey' Brodman answered with a short bank shot.The Blue Devils responded to a Snay free throw as Yost splashed a jumper in the lane to get within one-point of Seneca East. A free throw by Kessler tied the game at 29-29.Again, the teams traded baskets before the Tigers' Enders hit another three. Stockmaster made a couple free throws to end the quarter with Seneca East on top, 36-31.Carey's Phoenix scored inside to start the fourth quarter only to have Smith hit another three for the Tigers.Stockmaster hit four free throws on two trips to the charity stripe, and then went around a Carey defender for a right-hand layup to push Seneca East's lead to a dozen.The Blue Devils went on an 8-2 run to finish the game, but it wasn't quite enough to complete the rally.Yost made a midrange jumper, Kessler made two foul shots, and Brodman made one foul shot before the Tigers' Snay and Stockmaster made a free throw a piece. Kessler hit a three with 19.7 seconds left to complete the scoring.Seneca East's Stockmaster led all scorers with 14 points.Kessler scored 13 points, and Phoenix chipped-in 11 for the Blue Devils.
